A few Planishing Hammer projects. Thanks Baileigh!

Post by Oldsarge »

As some of you know Baileigh gave me a prize for the contest too, and I chose the planishing hammer. I said I'd post a picture after I got a little experience with the hammer, so here they are. The salmon started out as a flat cutout obviously, and I deleted a few parts, and stretched it taller to account for the curvature when planished. The front fins were then welded on. all the other fins I was able to stretch into shape and edge weld. This is 20g material, and it's a joy to butt weld!

The second piece is a fountain that I'm pretty happy with.... Each leaf is individually shaped, veins ground in and fitted to the pan. For the pan, I grabbed my air shear, and quite literally freehanded the shape in about 2 minutes. I then beat the tar out of it with a shaping hammer to get a little dish going, and then spent about 20-30 minutes at the hammer smoothing and shaping. The big leaves were similarly rough shaped with the wooden mallet, then planished to shape on the hammer....

Everything is clear powdercoated, and waxed afterward.... Here's a video of the test of the fountain as well..

Hope you enjoy!

Actually, I didn't win, but they liked my entry enough to award a prize of my choice! Thanks again Shane from Baileigh!

Beautiful fountain Oldsarge, love the color and sound. How well do those colors hold up outside? Do you clear coat?

Thanks for all the kind words! The colors hold up really well, I use Super Durable Crystal Clear from Powder Buy The Pound... It's the best clear I've found. It flows out like glass, and is made for exterior use like wheels and such... I've had pretty good success with it... I'm leaning toward keeping the fountain for myself, it sounds like music chimes when it's running, but I'll put it up at the gallery for a while before I decide!

Forgot to include this one the other day, it's a tree of life commissioned by a customer... One of my favorite pieces... the pictures are really bad, this thing is electric in the right light!

Cheers!
