Golly Whopper

Post by biggator850 »

Here is a picture of a trophy we built for a fishing tournament coming up in June. The back is 16ga steel and the fish is 1/4" plate. Who ever wins better hang it on a stud! The trophy for first place King Fish is still in the shop! Coming soon!

The background is powder coated silver blast with the black letters powder coat stenciled over it. Both parts then received a metal flake clear powder top coat. It is so shinny I had a real hard time getting the camera to focus to take a picture.

Here is the King Fish trophy! There were some minor blemishes in powder coating, the final metal flake clear helped balance everything out! :D

Hi question about your process are you doing sliver blast then bake next stencil lettering then bake and finishing clear and bake again???

Tom,
It is a 3 coat process. Bake the base coat, then apply the powder stenciled letters and bake, then a final metal flake clear coat. The buildup of mill thickness of the clear over the base gives the powder coat almost a 3d look to it. The pictures cannot even come close to showing what it really looks like.

One lesson learned on this project was to only fully cook the final clear coat. On the first one we fully baked each layer. We noticed the end that was hanging closer to the heating elements was a little darker color than the other. I think it is because the silver blast base coat got over cooked a little by going through 3 full bake cycles. The second one we cooked the base and letters at a 75% bake (75% of the temp and about 75% of the time), then fully baked the final coat. The final coat is the only one that has to fully bake, all the previous coats just need to bake enough to fluidize the powder and to go through any out gassing. Worked like a champ!

Beautiful work! What kinds of letters are you applying that can be heated at those temps?

Here you go boys and girls! The final result was amazing and to the folks at the weigh in they were the best trophies EVER! I could not have pulled this off without the help of my fellow Plasma Spiders! Thanks for all your help!

This was a small potatoes tournament and I actually heard people saying that they had entered tournaments with $10k entrance fees and the trophies were no where near as cool! Thanks guys! :D :D :D :D
