Question, I ordered both the keyed 5/8" shaft and 4" drive wheel with a 5/8" hole that is keyed, and they measure out to be just that, should I press them, or slightly sand the shaft down for a not as tight fit?
I would not press them. They will require replacement . . . Mine slip on and are keyed.

I just called Beaumont and asked them on their take, and they say that it is likely that the 5/8" shaft has a burr on it from being saw cut to length. I never even looked at it, will check tonight.

Well, your build inspired me and I went and ordered aBaldor VM3550 3ph 3450rpm motor to start my build. It will take me a while to collect parts but I've gotten some good ideas from your build and others. I'll probably need your help with the VFD from the sound of it.

Just happens I've got the parts sitting around and just need to make a frame, haven't been able to conceptualize it very well yet and make a drawing. Ordered the drive shaft as I currently am thinking belt driven, but to leave it open to being a direct drive someday. Using this http://www.harborfreight.com/1-horsepow ... 68288.html to power it, it says it is only 1 HP, but when you take the amps times the volts and divide the ~760 Watts/HP, I come up with 2 HP. This might explain why the reviews people were describing it the way they do..

That KBAC-27D is the one I've been looking at. Where did you order it from? It looks like Amazon has the lowest price of about $380 shipped. it doesn't have the extra switched but switches are cheap.

http://www.amazon.com/KBAC-27D-Black-Dr ... B007YA2YYE

My motor should be here next week and I'll start on my design.
I'd definitely be interested in ordering the wheels. I'm also planning on putting a 10" contact wheel on mine and maybe later a small radius wheel set.

What size drive wheel are you using.
I've ordered the 1 1/2hp 3450rpm motor so I'm thinking 4" maybe 5"

Sarge,

What is the dimension on the tool arm that slides in and out of the frame. I think you are using the same as a KMG, so that it will fit as well if you ever buy one? Just curious what to design mine around.

The KMG uses a 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" solid in either steel or aluminum.

Price from Beaumont Metal Works (KMG) is $80.00.

If you need any dimensions from a KMG let me know.

I just bought one with several accessories.

And another thing ------ Heat is a problem when heavy grinding on parts, especially if you are working with metals already hardened. I keep a bucket of water under the wheel or platen when grinding to dunk parts into to keep them (and my fingers) from getting too hot. The bucket of water under the grinding also helps control dust a lot. A few drops of dawn dish soap in the water lets all the dust settle to the bottom of the water. Never did figure out how to turn the bucket horizontal without the water pouring out though

Check out Nathan's water cooled/chilled platens . . . .dissipates the heat to "touch comfortable" . . .

You circulate water via a small pump or simply use a domestic water connection . . . if you live in Louisiana that is . .

Steve, Sarge,

Thanks for the input, I will go by some 1.5" and probably build it around that.

Sarge, How much clearance did you allow for the tool arm? the cylinder bushings is good deal, I cant get repeat ability like that myself though.

I have a question I have looked at these grinders for some time now and one thing I don't agree with.
That is the use of the 1-1/2" solid bar steel for the sliding supports. I think 1-1/2" 1/4" wall tubing would be more the enough and would be much cheaper.
http://www.speedymetals.com/pc-4773-825 ... ubing.aspx

That said they are great grinders and this one is superb.

have fun

A lot of people in the knife making groups have tried the square tube route.

Typical complaints are some flexing, irritating resonance, tracking problems & no real cost savings considering lifetime of use.

You can not just look at the overall strength of the tube vs. the solid stock because the solid stock provides a far better mounting point for accessories.

It eliminates a lot of engineering problems when it comes to mounting a 20 lb 12" contact wheel and adjustable work rest.

Some go with aluminum square stock & it too works very well.

The square stock is not used for it's support strength, it is used because it will not twist or deflect in the slightest.

Those that use square tube constantly fight tracking problems during actual use.

You have to realize a 1/4 turn on the tracking knob will take you completely from one side of the wheels to the other.

Think of it this way, just how thick would a piece of 12" X 12" piece of square tube need to be to make a "good anvil".

A piece of square tube thick enough to not flex would weigh almost as much as a piece of solid.

My 2 cents on square tube vs. solid stock based on a year of researching 2X72 belt grinders.

I bought a Beaumont 2 HP variable speed with some accessories.
