Our latest lighted sign

Post by 1fine79 »

Well I finally got this project done. A local contractor brought by a rough sketch (like in pencil scratched out on the back of an old envelope) of a sign he wanted for a new coffee shop he was working on. He gave the particulars that his customer had asked for, like they wanted it back lighted and they wanted it to be very old and rusty looking (like an old barn find sign) so we came up with this little beauty. As it just so happened...I had just received my very first shipment of goodies from SteelFX and was chomping at the bit to find something to use them on....wow, perfect timing! After some phone conversation with Bill about the best way to achieve that perfect patina....it turned out pretty nice. Thanks Bill!!!
Oh...and BTW...when you order your LED light kits online, make sure your not ordering them out of Hong Kong. Yep that's what I did....good deal but it took nearly 4 weeks to get them here.

AWESOME. Would you mind sharing what the treatment was to get that finish? It is clearly more than just spray RustFX. Looks like there may have been some fabric or something left on it to develop the grain look in the rust.
Thanks,

Nope, no fabric used, here's what I did. I laid the sign flat and evenly sprayed it with RustFX. While that was doing it's thing, I came back and sprayed some AuburnFX in different spots to get that darker blotched color effect. I left that to develop rust and color for an hour or so in the sun. It all looked ok but I thought it needed more "age" so I took the RustFX again and opened the tip up to a very splattering spray and just let some big drops fall on the sign. As that was "cooking", I picked up the top end of the sign and let some of the solution run down the face where it wanted to. When it developed more and it looked good to me, I rinsed and dried it and clear coated it with Satin clear ( wasn't looking for a glossy finish) and TAH DAH, it was just what the customer wanted.
I can't wait to get into some more of my SteelFX goodies and experiment with some of the other finishes.

How was the lighting applied? What did you use for lighting?

The lights are an LED strip. comes with a self-stick tape backing. Came in a light kit with 12v power supply from LED light world online (caution...if you are looking for quick delivery, go somewhere else. these took nearly 4 weeks to get here from Hong Kong)
The font I used for 'Wired' is called caslame and I found it on one of the free font sites...can't remember which one but you can do a search and I'm sure it will pop up somewhere.

Hope that helps.

Nice sign good use of LED's. I also use local suppliers for LED's that way if you have problems you are more likely to get a resolution. Craig Johnson
