OS2U Kingfisher Model + DXF

Post by Craig »

This is a model of the first airplane to fly off the USS Iowa (BB-61). Technically it's called a float-plane because it lands and takes off from the water. This model was catapult launched and is retrieved and hosted on board the ship by crane.
This was made from mild steel and powder coated in battleship gray.

Here are some WWII era films of it in operation.

Thanks guys, since being asked to join the board of directors of the Battleship Iowa I have been looking at ways to enhance the museum experience. I have always felt that we needed to add aviation exhibits to the museum. After doing some research I came to the conclusion no Kingfisher?s where available to us for display. I did this piece to explore the feasibility of building a full size Kingfisher replica that could be displayed on board. And with my hobby being metal working I thought this is was a perfect fit for me and great excuse to start another project. I also thought that maybe we could turn a full size replica into a ride like X-Scream at the top of the Stratosphere hotel in Las Vegas.

I will post some pictures, when I get a chance, of how I went from a wood model to what you see in the post. Craig Johnson

And if you haven't already please check out the Iowa and come by for a visit.

Nice Build. How many hours do you have into it? What scale is it built at?

Thanks everyone, this project took me 4 months to complete but i am not in the shop or at the computer every day so I don't know exactly how many hours but it was a lot. But I would say I spent about 2/3 of my time doing the drawing and trying to figure out how I was going to connect everything.
the Scale is about 1/5.
The model I made is about 7 feet long and 6 feet wide and 3 feet tall. It's made out of welded mild steel (The Kingfisher was the first production all welded aircraft) its powder coated in an indoor/outdoor epoxy based paint in battleship gray.

Here is how i did this project:
First I had this wooden model 3D laser scanned:
Untitled-1.jpg
And ended up with this OBJ. file:
OBJ file.jpg
Then I used Autodesk's 123D Make to generate the basic DXF files and then used PlasmaCam's Design Edge software to create the 2D sections with all the holes and details that I then could cut on my table:

Wow Craig :o you do some fantastic work. I have been thinking of trying 123d make. How much did it cost you to get your model laser scanned?
Can't wait to see what you come up with next. :D Albert

Thanks Albert, that's nice of you to say.
This one cost about $500 to get scanned and they also dissected it for me into it's major sections wings, fuselage & floats. It made it easier for me to turn them into DXF files but more computer time on there part.
