For whom the bell tolls...

Post by Oldsarge »

It tolls for me! I've been wanting to do a bell for a long while, and everything came together today!

CopperFX base, CopperFX bronze, 3/16 copper rivets

Brass highlight is etched with a carbide burr, heated with a torch and scrubbed with a brass wire brush to transfer a layer of brass to the steel.... After the patinas, I went back over the brass area and copper rivets with a small brass brush to clean off the bronze, and gave it a nice clear powdercoat. It rings like crazy!, sounds like it's resonating for 5 minutes!

The hanger is 3/8" cold rolled bar, and given a bark texture complements of the forge, power hammer and generosity of Plain Ol' Bill.... Thanks Bill!

I used my forge today to draw out the end and form the hook, and brace. I hit this with CopperFX and just lightly touched the corners with BronzeFX. A note on the bronze, I always hit it quick and rinse, then after air drying, depending on the finish I want, I either go over the bronze very lightly with a green scrub pad, or just a dry cotton loop towel to even it out and blend it together.

This was the second bell I've done, and I'm really happy with it... I learned a lot, and the next few will be even better!
