Here's a 48" diameter clock I cut for my wife's co-worker. 3 layers. Back layer is the big gear shape, it's rusted with a clearcoat. Middle layer (the "gears") has a patina finish (Steel F/X Copper, then Flame, then Bronze), front layer is Metalcast Stainless paint. Customer wanted a gears/mechanical/metallic theme. So, we've got fresh/shiny metal on the front layer, "in use" patina in the middle layer, and "old and neglected" rust for the back layer. Cut it from 14ga, cut some LARGE sawtooth hangers for the back. All up, it weighed 42 lbs. Now my wife wants one. I may try making it out of thinner material for our place. Customer LOVED it.

Thanks guys! It was intimidating at first, but now that I know what to do, it wouldn't be such a big deal to create another.

Most commonly asked question..."Do those gears actually spin?" Ahhh, no. They COULD, but the price just went way, way up!

May have to do that for the one the wife wants, though.

Totally functional. The clock movement itself is very small. 2 3/16" square, 5/8" deep.

No worries! I've had that question quite a bit. With the mechanism so small, I wanted just enough "center" metal to hide it. Kind of adds to the effect. That being said...big surprise to me to learn that an $850 clock (or $600 plastic/tin one from a furniture store) both use the same $15 clock mechanism...$25 if you want it to be the "self correcting for DST" version!
