dozer portible track pin press

Post by ggeh »

I had to separate the tracks on my dozer so this is what I came up with. I found an ame 100ton jack on EBay. It has a 4inch piston and the cylinder is 8inch x 12 inches.I made the press frame to fit the jack and the track chain. I cut it out of 5/8 plate. I could not budge the pin with a sledge hammer but that 100 ton jack pushed the pin out and then back in at about a 1/4 inch a second without even straining. Hydraulics are amazing. I'm good for about 3 wacks with the sledge and then I have to sit and rest for five. Talk about making life a lot easier.

Not sure which is more impressive, the dozer or the press. Did this one time 50 years ago with torch and hammer in the mud. Young and knew it all....

I did the same with a sledge and torch not in the mud but in my garage with a concrete floor 10 years ago and it took a long time and a lot of work. I'm 65 now and you couldn't pay me to do it like that again. 4 years ago I had a front idler go bad on my 200 class excavator and hired a guy that does this for living to split the track. He had a portable pin press said it cost $6500 used. Don't know how many ton it was but esealy pushed that pin out. I purchased a CNC plasma table 2-1\2 years ago and thought if I ever learn how to use it a track pin press would be one of my projects.
