BBQ Charcoal Grill

Post by larrycameron44 »

Hi folks....so excited my 2x4 order will soon be on a slow boat from the grand old USA to little NZ...... tick tick tick
Anyways back top the topic posted BBQ Charcoal Grill. I have included a picture of one from a leaflet a mate bought back from the States this week. I tried to get him to bring the plasma 2 x4 and all the bits with him but 600 lbs later he said NO! Nasty man :D
So does anyone have a file similar to this which I could make up, cuz the idea is just great and something we don't have here.
Ours tend to be on the ground surrounded by a mass of concrete blocks with a some reinforcing iron as the grill area and the yahoo hooligans chop down the native trees to get the food cooking, of course I myself used the dead wood fallen down from the trees so I can't be classed in the same category
They are not pretty!
Any help guys and girls?

This should give you a starting point. If you don't have a press Brake then just cut along the dotted line ;)

Cool Grill, glad to have the DXF! thanks a bunch..... what thickness is the grate cut from? is 1/4 enough or will it warp?

I have a piece of 1/4" that I cut to lay across those rusted grills you find at campgrounds, to cook on. Probably 5 years or so now and it's still as flat as the first day I used it.

Probably a dumb question... but is it ok to use mild steel for cooking surfaces and paint with high heat barbeque paint- or does it need to be stainless ? I've been trying to figure out a definate answer

dont paint it, even high temp paint will burn off and get into your food. Just leave in raw, keep it clean and coat it with Pam or a cooking spray between uses.

I slightly modified the drawing as I don't have a brake that will bend 1/4" steel in sheets that wide. I cut it out as a bottom, back and two sides. Will be trying to weld it up soon. I'll try to post pics when I do. Thanks for the files to work with. Can't wait to try it out.

I finished welding together the BBQ grill and making a post support for it. One added feature I customized was to add our family name to the back side of the grill. It should not only add the desired custom look, but also make the grill a little less appealing to someone wanting to steal it. It would be very unlikely that someone would steal something with 2 inch lettering on the back of it naming the owner. For the base I just poured concrete in a 5 gallon bucket and plan to bury the bucket so the concrete is level with the ground. This will set the grill height at just about the perfect height for cooking during any family get together.

Thanks for the original design. It cut great on the PlasmaCam system.

I need to do this and put it in the Shelter House by my pond...
That would be slick! I already have a fire pit down there for Weenie Roasts...

It would be best to "season" the grate before you start to cook on it. There are many different schools of thought on how to do that. I personally heat the metal to smoking hot and then spread a little lard on it. Just a nice thin coating spread with a paper towel or cloth one that doesn't leave lint. Once it starts to smoke turn off the heat and let it cool down. Wipe down with a paper towel and then repeat the process at least two more times. This will protect the surface and make it non-stick. To clean just leave the grate hot and scrape with a spatula or something flat. I use a 6" drywall knife. It is a different design but the same concept.

That is great! That is made far better than any of those style cooking grates than I've ever seen at a campsite. Usually they are very warped and almost unusable. However, those are usually made from sheetmetal and just left outside for years. That is very nice!
My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely.
