Something In My Spare Time

Post by tnbndr »

Spare Time, what is that? This is something I am working on for our patio and don't need until next year as snow will be flying soon here. The top is cut out of 3/8" HR steel and was cut by Josh @ Big Creek Metalworks as I don't have access to a table that will cut 3/8" steel decent. I ended up edging it with 1-1/2" 10 gauge so I probably could have used 1/4" for the top. But rest assured that the wind will not be blowing this table around.
Top is almost complete. Now I need to decide on a design for the legs. I am building a tubing roller so that I can curve some square and round tube and plan on making the base look like a tree trunk.
Any other suggestions are welcome.

Another shot with the center cut inserted when the fire pit is not being used. For some reason I cannot add more than one attachment per post, it kicks me off the forum. Table is 42" round and will stand 30" tall, standard table height as we have chairs already.

was the cut pattern from a ready made file, or did you put all the leaves in manually. If manually how do you start with spacing/angles and making it all fit right.

@elevnhome21:
This was not a ready made pattern. I started with the two circles, took a leaf pattern I found somewhere scaled it and rotated until it fit between the two circles. I placed all the large onse randomly and overlapped, then I go in and trim the overlaps. I work in Autocad so every so often I do a hatch in black to fill in the design solid, it gives me a better idea of what the finished product will look like. Then I scaled down the same leaf to a smaller size and started filling in gaps. If i got to an area where the small leaf wouldn't fill it in, I just placed it and then scaled it up to fit and overlap slightly. I drew the acorn free hand and placed those to fill in more gaps. I did not want a solid top but didn't want a wine glass or ??? to be able to tip or fall through the gaps either. Once everything was placed it is just a matter of trimming overlapping patterns. Everything was done random but you could do one half and then mirror that to fill in the other half. I just tend not to like evenly spaced and placed patterns. But that is a personal thing.
I am pleased with the way the top is turning out. The base/legs will be time consuming if I do what I am thinking.

The skulls would be cool, but I don't think my wife would have gone for it. She does like the oak table though.

Thats pretty cool elven, but I am actually the opposite of tnbndr, I absolutely must have symmetry and clean sharp lines in most instances. I'm always going the square route, the symmetrical and mirror reflection route, it drives my wife absolutely insane because she is more like tnbndr, She loves rounds, asymmetry, etc...

We've been lamenting over a coffee table for 2 years, she wants an oval, I want a square. I will keep yu guys posted on that project.

That looks sweet. Are you going to incorporate a firebox into the legs since it's table height?

Not sure what you mean by fire box?
Where the table sits I have a pit roughed into the patio where I will route a 3/4" natural gas line from the basement. From there it will connect to a shut off valve incorporated into the legs of the table somehwere. From the shut off valve a line will route to the connection on the fire pit ring. The ring will get covered with glass, lava rock or ????
You can use propane to run these also but I did not want to deal with refilling tanks and trying to hide into the table design.

If I can ask , did you buy your gas ring or build it? And if you built it could you share some of the details .I've been wanting to build one of these for my back deck and the fire ring plumbing is the only thing I had questions on.

Thanks

@mike66: I built the pan for the gas ring to mount into as they were outrageously expensive but I bought the ring here ,
http://firepitoutfitter.com/18stainless ... tring.aspx. I wasn't sure if there is any technology in the size and spacing of the holes and by the time I purchased the stainless tubing, rolled it and welded it the ring did not seem that expensive. You can find them on ebay also.

Thought I'd post an update. I finally finished this project as I wanted it out of the garage before my table arrived. It turned out nice, but there are a couple of things I would change if I make any others. It definitely puts out some heat.
Did a two tone powder coat with wrinkle finish.

What things would you change? It looks great.

I'd either make the fire ring smaller, it is 18" and the table is 12" for a 42" round, or make the table part 3" larger for a 48" table. Drinks only get warm on the side the wind is blowing the flame toward. Table only gets warm about 4" outside of fire ring.
Or I would add another table ring dropped down on the outside about 6" wide to set drinks on.

tnbndr,

Approximately how much does just that 3/8" thick table top weigh?

I think the table turned out fantastic BTW.

I was able to lift and move it around the shop while welding, etc. But it wasn't fun.
My guess is the top alone weighs around 100#. Finished table is probably around 150#.
