Help with Faces

Post by yeomansjon »

Hey there everyone. I am wondering if someone can give me a hand with a tough picture. I want to make a picture frame for a picture that I like of me and two of my buddies. I tried to convert in Illustrator but the light gradient across the picture is making it difficult for me as a beginner. Does anyone think it is possible to convert this drawing to something that I can cut out?

I wanted to make a 5x7 rectangular hole for the original picture, with the plasma cut silhouette below the real picture. Nothing in the dark back ground needs to be retained. Just a thought. Let me know if anyone can help me with this one!

Gary, how did you convert that so quickly ??? What programs do you use ?

Thanks in advance !

I would also love to know. I will say though that seeing you generate this so fast inspired me to give Adobe Illustrator another go. This time I watched a few YouTube videos' on tracing and once I got the hang of it, it really is much easier than I thought. Now that being said the stuff I have tried out is nothing compared to the quality and expediency that Gary has, but I do think there is hope. Using the pen tool with Adobe Illustrator to trace features seems to be the way to go in my book. But i'm open to other ideas. There are plenty of other posts on this forum talking about this. With some searching, you will find some good information. If I wasn't so pressed for time right now I would search and point to some links.

I too have to echo the comments of the others who have posted to this request. Amazing work !

When I first looked at the faces I sat back and thought to myself, '...yeah right. Who can do anything with that image?'

Wow... am I ever eating my words now !!!

If you've got any tips you can share that would be sweet.

Amazing, simply amazing.

Well, as always, using a Cintiq display pen tablet, I drew over it in large clean 2 color black and white in photoshop, then used autotrace to convert that to vectors, then finalize with corel, then use v-carve pro to make the DXF.

Portraits are not something I can always do so easily.

I wish I could get my act together and get a site together and explain a few things, and I'm trying, but nothing ever goes as planned, so still trying......

After reading the entry about tracing the original image I headed on to the net with my tablet and found a program that seems to fit the bill, Traces. You can import an image or take a photo from you tablet and then use various pens to trace the picture... removing the original image or bringing it back in at you leisure. Then save your traced work and email it to yourself, export the file to your computer, etc. Then touch it up with a CAD program.

All that being said I dont have the artistic eye that our friend with Sign Torch does...!!!

I want to say thank you again to Gary at for putting this together. Though it took me awhile to finally cut the frame, here is the final product. Came out great!

If you start a website explaining the process of creating DXF's and modifying images using Corel, inskape etc that would be awesome. I would certainly subscribe. Many of us (like me) are stating and not really at ease with these tools.
Something to think about..-:) even a yearly subscription to learn would be something interesting.
