Steel Moving Equipment

Post by bafortin »

I am trying to find some plans for a lift or some piece of equipment that I can move my steel from the stack to the table. I am needing some type of device or lift because my 17 year old will be gone in another year, and, as we all know, 4 X 8 sheets of steel are not easy to move. Any help with a lift design would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if I want to buy a forklift or make something to move the steel. Thanks

Get one of the magnets. You can find them on ebay. I bought 2 of the 1400 pounders and they are great. I use my skid loader but you can use a engine puller which is what most guys use.

Yes that's one that acourtjester posted link to that I modified the sack truck, must say it works great, a 6mm 8 x 4 sheet would be about the limit, but I keep 1/2 sheets in 12mm for small parts, it will move those about fine too, one mod I did add was to add a strip of rubber on the wood cross piece for extra grip.

I keep thinking I might make some sort of trolley to do the same job as clipping the brackets onto the table.

Here is the other contraption I came up with for getting full sheets off the truck onto the table, works great no problem at all with 12mm - 8x4 sheets.
I was also wondering about a fork lift or some sort of hoist, but went for the easiest cheapest option and it works just fine.

I made up the rollers all on the table, 6mm washers with 12mm hole, cut the slots and holes as well.

I have used a cherry picker..roll around gantry crane.. 4 people grabbing a corner of 3/8" plate and a prybar to center it. I gave in and bought a 40' long 3" i-beam about 2 months ago and it was the best choice I have made. I built a trolley and the beam is supported every 20'. On the trolley is a northern tool winch. I think I could run my table while on crutches now if needed.
