Tips for bending round hooks

Post by whiskeymike »

Anyone have any tips for bending round hooks on the bottom of a coat/key rack? I have a hydraulic press brake and a pan brake. With them in a stock configuration, I have to either bump them and bend every 1/4" or bend 2 90 degree bends which is okay, but would prefer rounded bends. I'm thinking about cutting a slot in 1.5" pipe that will fit over the die and figuring that it might put a round 170 degree bend in it, but don't want to waste the pipe if that's not the best way to go about it. Working with 16 gauge steel.

I'd prefer to get a Baleigh magnetic brake, but I can't fit one in my shop at the moment.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I'm talking about having finger like pieces as part of the sign/rack that get bent up. I'm also trying some hooks I affix to the piece like a horse shoe or prefabbed hooks. But in this case, I'm just looking to bend the part as an integral piece off the plasma cutter. Something like this - (just the first thing I found off google images) Image

What's the forming process you guys use for something like this.

If I want to bend just a few of them at home, I would weld an appropriately sized piece of pipe or round bar along the edge of a flat bar, clamp the piece I want to bend to it with at least 2 clamps, put the thing in a vise and use a dead blow mallet to bend the tabs over the pipe/round bar, down n dirty and simple....

With 16 gauge i just use my hands and wrap it around a spray paint can. The size is normally 1 1/2 to 2 inch wide for the hangers on mind. That way it can support my 3xl heavy coats. I have something like OTHILL for 11 gauge and bigger.

You could make dies for the press brake, but you need to make a top and bottom die and separate dies for different sizes. The bottom die needs to be oversized to allow for the gauge of the material being bent. Takes some time to build but then you have it forever.

Mike, we have press brake, folders and rollers but these ones here we do in this simple fixture by hand. These ones are 16 gauge but we do also do 1/8" tack holders with 4 hooks in the same fixture. We would do probably 30 plus per week and the guys are happy enough to do them by hand.

More great ideas. Redneck, do you have a picture of your device? The video is a bit dark at the device and not sure what it's comprised of. I'm thinking it's a stationary pipe and then a second that revolves around the first?

I think I may fab up one of Muzza's this weekend
