Cutting Brass Sheet

Post by radnurse68 »

I have a customer that wants a Bumblebee 50x42 cut out of "thin" brass. The material is $1075 for a 4x10 sheet of 1/8 in. The supplier I checked with out of Houston said the 4x10 sheets start at 1/8 in and go up. The thinnest I could get in 3x8 sheet is 24g and it's $300. Those prices are for pick up only. I would have a 4 hour drive to pick it up. Do any of you have any experience cutting brass sheet? Due to the cost of material if I screw up I am considering outsourcing it to a local water jet company. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I had the same considerations for an estimate recently too. Customer wanted silhouettes cut out of copper. Best price I got was $600 for a 4x8 16GA sheet. I gave them the price of $900 for the sheet and told them I'd charge by the inch for the cuts and do them pretty cheaply. Luckily they said it was too much. I was worried that if I was doing big cut outs on it and the machine had an issue I'd have to eat a sheet of copper to finish the job. I wanted to try it but I was glad they decided against it.

Did you show him the finishes that he can get from Steel FX stains? My wife gets some pretty cool brass/copper finishes with that stuff.

I tried cutting brass and it was not that great,,,,,,,,using water jet would be your best bet for the price of the material

Not sure where my previous reply landed...

I cut 16 gauge C464 brass with decent results. It is a bit expensive and my customer still decided on brass even after offering other look-alike options. I babysit the brass cuts at these prices.
