Cutting Holes in multi-layer sign

Post by MakeSouth »

Hello Makers…. I have an issue I’m trying to resolve and looking for suggestions “Help”. I have a multi-layer metal sign that I’m building and want to use machine screws to connect the layers together. I’m trying to figure out how to create the cut holes for the machine screws in CorellDraw so when I cut the individuals pieces all of the hole patters line up without me having to manually hand drill each one out after all of the pieces have been cut. I want the machine to cut the holes out for me and they all line up for installation. Thanks in advance !

Create multiple layers. Copy/duplicate the holes into each layer.

CommandCNC/Linux w/ Ohmic & HyT options
Hypertherm Powermax 85 w/ machine torch
Solidworks, Coreldraw X7, Inkscape, Sheetcam

For sure and I would group your holes together once the pattern is created so you don't move any of them by accident. Copy and paste the hole pattern onto each design.

I use Inkscape but you should be able to do the same thing with CorellDraw.
when you have the complete drawing with all layered parts I break them apart and then combine lets say one of the top parts with the bolt hole location. I then copy that to another page of the program. I do this so I can nest all the parts for one layer and make a G-code for them.
Now back to the original drawing I then break it apart again and remove to outlines of all the top layer parts. By breaking them apart you can leave the bolt hole in place on the next layer down. You can then copy these layer parts with the bolt hole as above but on another page for a different G-code or just nest them with the other parts.
I machine a bolt as shown to be plug welded to the back of the top payer parts.

Here's how I attach layered pieces. Sometimes I'll make templates to locate the nuts.
