3 D Stars

Post by Kentuckyfarmer »

Does anyone have a dxf of the 3 d stars everone has hanging on walls etc? My wife wants one, I know it will need to be cut in pieces and bent and welded, not a problem, just dont have the cad skills to draw it and get angles correct. Thanks ,sorry to bother

No problem :) Glad I could finally contribute something to the forum! I looked up the formula for making it and then after I finished making it I decided to do some more practice in CorelDRAW and what do I find... a star making option (and a spiral maker), would have saved me a lot of time clearing out the cobwebs in my head on using the formula  Makes me feel old thinkin about it, but it's been about 12 years since I've had trig. (Not poking fun of you senior, errr distinguished guys)

Very welcome! I like the relief cut idea. Next time I make one, it'll save me a crap load of welding. Or perhaps ONE of these days I'll have a break that can do more than 16 gauge.

p.s. thanks for posting pics :D

These are all awesome. Is the geometry correct in the dxf posted? For instance, does the back of the star sit flat when laid on its back? I've been trying to come up with the math to figure this out, but it ends up being a long night of thinking, which ends up turning into a long night of drinking and by the time I'm ready for bed, I've forgotten what it was I originally sat down to do.

Thanks,
Cody

When I originally drew the star, it was done using geometry... Then shortly after I found CorelDRAW offers a star making option :x But yes, star will lay flat or can have it 3D and still lay flat across the back.

The easiest way I have found to figure out a 3 dimensional object is to just build one out of thick stock black cardboard and a pair of scissors & some tape. Once you have the pieces built just the way you like em, just un-fold them, lay them flat on the copier and then copy them. Take the image into Corel and then trace it.

Much easier than trying to figure out all the angles and geometry and such. Once the image is vector, you can have Corel do all the dimensions and angles and such for you. Then just quickly adjust or tweak as needed. :)

Hope this helps.
