You can also draw gears in Inkscape, I think you will need to download an additional add on (free too) :D

Used these to make sign for a client to display at local flea market, etc.. Modified the smaller gear a bit.

This is interesting. acourtjester can you elaborate on the terms used to describe a gear.Just went on to Inkscape and produced a gear in seconds. But no idea about the terms.Thanks.

First I must say I am not a machinist but have cut gears for my own use using a dividing head ( both mechanical and CNC method).
When you get to the gear window you must change one of the values for it to display a gear drawing. If you click on Live preview it will draw another gear with the changes, you will see both the original and the new gear.
Number of teeth will show the number of teeth on the gear it draws. The Circular pitch is a funny thing to get you head around. I have attached a few examples from Google. But it is a method of forming the diameter of the gear, it is a diameter that is in the middle of the tooth height for the gear. This will change with the number of teeth on the gear (pitch diameter) The last image shows the measurement of the circular pitch for a gear I drew with 4.5 as a value (I was slightly off with the positioning when measuring it should show 4.5") The pressure angle is standard at 20 in the US there was another used years ago which was 14.5. Diameter of center hole is just that what ever bore you want plug it in.

Thanks acourtjester.I have used Sprocketeer and was wondering just lately how to design gears. Didn't realize it was that easy.
