There are different ways to rate max thickness on any plasma depending on the usage.

If you are planning to use the Powermax65 for mechanized cutting....then most likely you will need to pierce the material with the torch mounted perpendicular to the material. The pierce rating for steel is on the Hypertherm brochure, for Aluminum and Stainless it is slightly downgraded. Piercing of steel can be done on a production basis on 5/8", on aluminum and stainless the production piercing is 1/2". This requires a height control system that can accurately set pierce height, pierce delay and cut heights as outlined on the cut charts in the Powermax operators manual.

If hand cutting you can pierce thicker depending on technique....tipping the torch at an angle so the molten metal blows away from the front of the torch will allow you to pierce much thicker...an experienced operator can pierce 1" with the Powermax65 on all three materials.

If you can edge start (either by hand or by machine) the maximum severance thickness is rated at 1-1/4". An experienced operator can usually do as much as 1-1/2" on steel, stainless and aluminum.
