hypertherm 65 lowest nozzle size

I have a LDR table with a PM 65 torch. I bought a bunch of dxf files from a very reputable designer. In his directions he suggests to cut at 30 to 40 amps. Can this be done with my torch? thanks

A lot depends on the thickness of material. To get the smallest kerf on materials up to 10 gauge, use FineCut consumables and follow the low speed fine cut charts in your manual. If your manual is old enough that it does not have the low speed recommendations then you can download an updated manual from Hypertherm.com

The PM65 will fire down to 20A, I believe. That means you can use a Finecut or 45A consumable, and only fire 20A through it. You will have to do your own tests and come up with your own specs for this, but it's pretty easy to do starting with a line test. I'm using 20A in a standard 45A nozzle to cut corrugated 30ga tin, for example.

another thing is to reduce the pierce height and increase the cut height for thinner metal like 0.09" pierce and 0.080" cut for 18 Ga metal.
this helps to remove the pierce dimple at the start.

Making pierce height nearly the same as cut height will help reduce the pierce divot (at the expense of nozzle life). Reducing pierce delay will also reduce pierce divot, also at expense of nozzle life.

I recommend following the exact cut specs listed in the Powermax operators manual...there are 30 or so pages of cut charts that were all developed by cutting every thickness of metal in Hypertherms Process Development labs. Use the Finecut consumables on thicknesses from 26 ga to 10 ga, use the 45 amp shielded consumables from 12 ga to 1/4" and the 65 amp shielded consumables from 1/4" to 5/8". I do not recommend reducing the amperage to a given nozzle. 45 amps works best in a 45 amp nozzle, reducing below its rated amperage reduces the energy density of the arc and will negatively affect cut quality.
