Barks and Bubbles sign using Samson router

Post by Joe Jones »

I fired up the Samson today with the router attached, and cut out some lettering for a wooden sign for a new dog salon. The letters need a bit of sanding and additional care before they are primed and painted, and glued to a wooden background to make an interior sign near the front door.

The material isn't really good for this type of project, but it is what I had. I would have preferred to cut out the letters using the laser, or even using sintra board or something more router-friendly. This is what I had, so ...

Joe you may look at different bits to get better results, and another trick is to use sign vinyl as a mask to route through a per painted wood surface.
This is using a bit with a 5.26 degree taper (Caveman) And other techniques,

I can get great results when I use good material. This is that cheap Luan from the big box stores. It is the cheapest thin plywood, and it really isn't good for projects like this.

I would have preferred to use a nice piece of maple or something.

I think the letters look great Joe, looks awesome. Definitely would have been a good job for one of your lasers though.

Tom - those are some great looking projects! And I like the idea of using the vinyl mask for routing thru pre-painted wood. Which particular bit with 5.26 degree taper are you using? Brand and source please.

Thanks,
David

I very much agree.

"What router bit to use for cutting out plywood?
Downcut spiral router bits
Downcut spiral router bits leave an extra clean surface with the least possible amount of tearout. Why do you want a downcut router bit for plywood? Because downcut router bits produce a really clean surface with a scissor-like shearing action."

Here are some of the bits
This is the taper bit like the one I use, of all the bit sites I have stored I cannot fine the exact one. the site had many slightly different tapers, as stated I used a 5.26 degree taper.

compression type both up cut and down cut on the same bit, these bits give you the best of both worlds of up and down cut.

My neighbor finished the sign. Lots of work, sanding the letters, and laying out the pieces to match the business card.

Thanks. I did not do the finish work. That is my extremely artsy-crafty neighbor! She has the patience of Job. I am not good at finish work. I don't have the patience to pay close attention to fine detail on things that don't really matter.
