DXF Download

Post by zayne19 »

Hello,

When I find a dxf file on here that I would like to cut, when I download it, what do I download it to? We use Inkscape to design. When I download it and open the files into Inkscape, it is blown out and messed up. Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?

Which file are you downloading? Downloading a file is not like removing a photograph from an album and slipping it into your wallet. Files are collections of DATA, and the programs that work with the files must "see" the DATA in a format that it understands. Without software that can READ the DATA correctly, you are trying to write a book by spilling a can of alphabet soup onto the table

Tell me which file you attempted to download. I will also download it, and import it into Inkscape to try to replicate your problem, and find a solution.

I tried to download the "Buffalo Skull". It should be located on the first page of this forum. When the files shared are SVG, I can download them and upload them into Inkscape just fine. When they're only DXF, I have no idea what to do. I can download additional software if needed. I appreciate your help.

It worked for me. Look at the settings ... 300 DPI

Once you have the dxf file download just got to Inkscape and click File then click Open, then navigate to where you downloaded the file, locate the BuffaloSkull.dxf and click Open. The Buffalo Skull came right up on the screen for me. Does it not work for you?

It does not. It makes it micro size and keeps blowing it out. It also keeps downloading my dxf files as a pdf.

Do you know how to do a screen capture, so I can see what you are doing? It sounds like you are not opening or importing the file correctly.

Please post a screen shot of what it looks like when you open it and it "keeps blowing it out". Not sure what this means.
Thanks,

This is a game-changer for me! I've always opened the .dxf file instead of importing and got that tiny version in the lower left corner. Why didn't I think of this?! Thank you for the guidance.

Open or Import will both get it into Inkscape fine. Import will get it into an existing file, while open will create a new file. I do it both ways.
