Sign stand off

Post by kbenz »

I have a sign to make. he wants the letters to stand off the back plate about 1.5". The back plate is to be powdercoated silver and the lettering/logo is red. I have a couple questions. Whats the best way to stand the letters/logo off the base plate? Can a powdercoater do 2 different colors or will I have to make it to assemble afterwards?

It will probably be easiest to make two pieces, powder coat as needed and then assemble afterwords. One way to do this is to get some long threaded nuts (turnbuckles???) Not sure what they are called but here is an image I pulled from google
http://www.americanradiosupply.com/heav ... -1-5-long/

There are many different sizes. With this, you could burn holes in the top and bottom plate for screws or if you don't want screws to show on the front side, just tack weld some all-thread to the back of the front plate, then screw the turnbuckle?? nut onto it, then screw into it from the back plate. You could also just tack weld the turnbuckle to the front plate, then send it to powdercoating and then screw into it from the back of the bottom plate.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

This is a 3 layered Company Logo i made a couple of months ago for their new conference room. I cut 3/4" pieces off a 1" dia. aluminum rod. then drilled and tapped them for 1/4" x 20 thread. I then welded them to the backs of each piece to be stood off. I assembled to be sure it was correct. Then disassembled and painted the pieces their correct color, cleared with a matt finish clear coat, then reassembled. I decided to add another layer to the parts making up the oak leaf. You can cut the aluminum rod to any standoff you need. Just one of many ways of doing it that did not require any out of shop purchases
