Sanding metal for a polished/buffed appearance

Post by Metriccar »

I've been taking a flapper disc on an angle grinder to both sides of my sheet metal to get crud off and make a more shiny appearance.

Since it's a small angle grinder, it sometimes gouges in and it also takes longer than I'd like.

I asked about this earlier and someone posted a picture of a "Flex" machine, sort of like a tube instead of a disc. I can't find the name of this machine, if they're the only ones who make it, or where I could get supplies.

Has anyone used a belt sander?

Its much easier to use murasic acid to clean the metal before flap discing. You'll avoid the gouging and get a much nicer finish. Also be sure to do this outside and away from metal building. Rinse with clean water and baking soda before flap discing. The baking soda will neutralize the acid. Also be sure to wear a mask when using the murisic acid, gloves and stay upwind.

Use a FLAT flap wheel. It's easy to get steel shiny with no gouges.

When using acid to descale hot rolled steel do it outside and do not store containers of acid inside unless you are SURE it is capped tightly. Failure to do so will result in every tool in your shop turning to a nice golden brown with rust. Don't ask - OK.

I think you are looking for something like this. They are pricy but give a beautiful brushed finish, especially on stainless.

The Flex is a little more reasonable in price. I plan on purchasing one soon, going on Steel FX advise.
