take a picture stright down looking at it. Should be able to trace it. Just would need to know a couple of the dementions. Would not be that hard.

Re: grating for a drain
This should get you started. It's 48" across, wasn't sure what you needed. Just trim to size and duplicate it up to the length of each panel, OK.

Re: grating for a drain
Needed some practice so I built this from scratch. I've tried to maintain the apparent circle thickness, line thickness, etc as best as I can judge from the skewed photo.
This is one panel as I seen in the picture. Disregard the actual size and scale it to whatever you need.
Had to zip the DXF. Maximum file upload size is 1 Mb and the file was 1.02 Mb
Opened it in Sheetcam and everything appears fine.

Re: grating for a drain
You gotta learn Coreldraw. I drew that in something over an hour but that was because I had to think about it. I hadn't done this sort of thing for ages but looks like some of the grey matter had it in there still. You can knock things like this up at will once you get to a certain level in Coreldraw, and it feels goodreidy01 wrote:Very nice I've been looking for something like this for ages thanks for sharing.
Maybe the "grate" could also be used as wall art. Here's a rough idea of what it could look like on a wall, although probably a rendered wall would be better, and it would stand out more clear.

Re: grating for a drain
cheers beefy
that looks great
but we have run into a problem
WA being the nanny state it is requires that the holes be no larger than 13mm across
in not to sure if I can still use this pattern and still have something useable or will have to go with something else
I will have a play with this and see what I can make of it
cheers fergy

Re: grating for a drain
Could you give us a couple of dimensions, like the total length and width, and the number of 1/2" thick sheets you plan on using [ watch for weight ] ? That way we could make a file that would work for your project. Also that 13mm, is that like a plug that would go thru or the longest measurement that the holes can be in any direction?fergy wrote:hello again

Re: grating for a drain
hi larry
grating will be 1m wide and 34 metres long
plan on cutting the sheets at 2.4m long
there is one area where it goes to 1.5m wide and changes direction
but was going to sort that once I had a pattern
as I understand it a 13mm plug should not go through so long slots are not a problem
also the pattern shown is only an idea and given that the holes have to be 13mm now can change if it works
cheers Fergy

Holy cow that would take awhile to cut and be expensive! How would you all charge for something like this, by the inch/ pierce points?

Re: grating for a drain
Can you imagine how many "holes" (or slots) you are going to have in that much area. It going to be more like a half inch thick, course mesh than a drainage grate. Plus the thickness to "diameter" ratio (1 to 1) is not good for plasma cutting, so will the edge quality be acceptable.fergy wrote:hi larry

Then if the edge quality would suffice, could you price the job for all those pierces and get that price accepted.

Re: grating for a drain
Here is my try at the file you wanted, 2.4m long and 1m wide. I liked the way beefy did the edge so I did this one like his. Here are a couple of pics of what it looks like with no opening that a 13mm pin will go thru. There are aprox. 11,000 pierces in each section of grate and you will be doing 14 sections, that's a lot of times to burn thru a plate. Better have a lot of consumables on hand.
Hope this file helps you. If you get the job could you post some pics? ? ? ? ?

Re: grating for a drain
With the material and cutting costs involved with making this, I'd rather just pick something up from McNichols (http://www.mcnichols.com), then just make an overlay.

Re: grating for a drain
hey thanks larry
as with all building the rules have changed again
we only need 13mm hole size in the entry ways (approx. half the sheets)
all the other we can run beefys pattern
in the entryways im thinking I could run the same pattern but with another ring around the cross
inside the outer ring I you know what I mean
as it is the drains have been poured so something has to go over them and this is what they want
and because it is architectural it cannot be cheap
