Inkscape Photo Conversion HELP

Post by zayne19 »

Hello,

I teach high school agriculture and we have a new Plasma CNC and I am new to using Inkscape. I have a picture I am trying to convert so I can run it as a DXF, but am unsure how. Can someone show me how?

David (adbuch) has done some great Inkscape tutorials right here in the Inkscape forum. Just scroll down through the list of topics and you will find what your looking for. Let us know how it turns out.

Are you trying to reproduce the entire picture or only the reath with crosses and script? In either case - you have two choices - manual trace or auto trace. If you choose to auto trace, there will most likely be multiple iterations at different Threshold settings followed by editing/cleanup. If you choose to manually trace using the Bezier draw tool, then you just trace the parts you want and edit to suit your requirements.

Here is an example of using the auto trace method.

Here is an example showing a partial manual trace using the Bezier draw tool.

There are some good tutorial videos showing manual tracing and auto tracing techniques. Here are several I would recommend.

I don't know if this has been talked about but with Inkscape you can have multi pages open at one time. I do this for tracing or breaking up a image to construct a finished project. I manipulate sections and then hit copy and move to another page and paste it. This works for merging sections from different images or drawings into one finished project on a single page. I also use it for positioning items when planning a multi part DXF file for cut planning.
