Worst name brand grinder I 've ever owned -Rigid Grinder

Post by Sampson Jones »

The Rigid grinder is easily worst grinder I have ever spent money on . I liked the ergonomic design , how it fit my hand so about 100.00 I bought one at Home Depot . The switch went out in about 20 hours , and the repair took six weeks . Now the whole internals sound like its coming unwound and its barely turning all of about 60 hours total on it . I t has a lifetime service agreement on it , so this grinder will loose Rigid money big time . I would love to get my money back on this p.os.. Now I have a Makita that was bought in 1981 and has been abused horribaly and its still on the original brushes and has never been repaired . My Black and Decker grinders all lasted 15 years . The 9.99 at Harbor Freight will compete with the RIGID duribility

I have five grinders of different brand names. I am going to be replacing all with Metabo without the paddle switch over the next year or so. I have one now and it is by far my favorite and go to grinder. The model I like is the W6-115, the body is small enough for my hands to grip comfortable for extended periods. I have a W8-115 with the paddle switch and it is too large for my hands.

In my experience the Metabo grinders are by far the best. I keep 3 grinders loaded with different discs.....2 middle grade brands (such as yours) and the Metabo. I replace the middle grade units as they fail....every 2 to 4 years....the Metabo is over 10 years old. Kind of like a Hypertherm plasma....costs a bit more but worth every penny.

I agree... Metabo is the way to go. Ive had DeWalt and Rigid both. I wasnt impressed with their working life span. So now I have 2 Metabo grinders that have been used and abused for about 4 years.

Im on the prowl for a good used Hypertherm Plasma with hand torch.
PM me with details

Burned up 3 Harbor Freight Grinders in about 9 months. I have a Milwaukee now and I love it.

We use Dewalt D28110 grinders at our shop. Been working well for us. Get them for around $55.00.The guys prefer the size/weight/performance ratio of this model compaired to other ones we have had. I like the price. :D

I just ordered a new W6-115 from here for $79.
You can do a google search for Metabo and compare prices.

I've had a few Ridgid sanders, and was looking seriously at that grinder, and almost bought it. It felt good but it's heavy, which was a deciding factor... imagining long sessions with that beast! The sanders I bought had problems with the switches as well... After the second one crapped out I spoke with the store manager & got a store credit refund... If your manager is pretty decent, he won't care how long ago you got it, he'll RTV it and keep your business. Recently bought a brand new Makita off Craig's list and it's a really nice grinder... my last one held out for 6 years or so before the magic smoke escaped! I've heard really good things about Metabo... will have to check them out...

I've been using Makita for years w/ very few problems & I put them through hell. But, I do have 1 Metabo Variable Speed that is unbelievable! Not much difference with abrasive flap discs than the Makitas, but I turn the rpm's way down when I use a non-woven pad for polishing. Metabo is worth every penny & now that I've owned the VS model, that's the one I'll stick with. Just my 2? worth.
:)
P.S. My Makita Grinders all have the paddle switch, which some guys hate, but it's my favorite configuration.
