My New Built 4`x10` Plasma Table..Works Awesome

Post by Dishtech55 »

After my experience with my last 2 new tables, Being Junk.....I decided. I could build a better table. and I did.. 4x4 structure, one 3x3 for support on legs... Bought before metal went up...Bought off amazon.,, 3" x 6" T-Slot Aluminum Extrusion x 72". worked very well.. I did alot of reseach on different Boards to use. and went with the Proma MyPlasm with THC ! I had used a UCCNC board on my first table it was very good also. but just too many setting for me. This MyPlasm is by far the best I have ever had. It nice to stop and start where ever you want on cutting a file. I also use a wireless Gameing Controller.. I researched Rail systems.. and wanted commercial grade. So I bought the Speed Demon Rails 3 wheel ones. good for 460lbs. also know as SGR-25 Rails.and SGB-25 Blocks..... I ordered them from over sea. because they was out of them here in USA. Got them half price only paid ($807.00) shipped to my door. and in one week. I went through cncrouterparts to get my Rack and pinions. I got the 3:1 drives for Nema 23 motors.. went with Nema 23 425 oz motors.. work very well..I could build another one alot faster..after building this one .and knowing our mistakes, lol The table cuts super smooth. no Sawtooth cut at all.. I bought a new Hypertherm 45XP.. Really nice cutter.. Consumables last along time for me. I Have dry air. I have right at $5000.00 in my table. that includes the $2600.00 for the cutter.. took about a month total time to get it built. Thanks

UPDATE YEAR LATER ON TABLE> I cant be any happier , with my table. No problems besides user errors. This table has cut metal from 20 gauge to 1/2" with super cuts. The Proma MyPlasm is the best Controller I have used so far. Bearing are better than I expected, along with my 3:1 gear reductions, which gives me a smooth cut. Dont be afraid to build your own table.. you can make a better one. The rails was used on the Starlab tables. Thanks

Looks good man. Very satisfying to build your own vs buying one outright. There’s only a few table manufacturers that I would want to buy a table from and I can’t afford them! Lol

Nice job as you point out building your own table allows you to research and pick what you want to combine in the finished product. I have built 9 tables and used different electronics as I went along. It also allows you to give attention to places you want to give finer detail to. You can put your interest as you want without looking to make a profit, no real concern about labor costs, no worry about shipping costs either.

Yea.. I agree. Last 2 new tables were just junk.. But I learned how to work on them..and what they was all about.. so decided to build my own. Very happy with it and its smooth cut.. never had that on any others. Took me a month here and there in the shop to build. but glad I did now. Thanks

Yea ,, Your right.. Cant look at the time into it..But will say it was fun. (Well, Most of time) I did make mistakes..and if I could build another one. It would be faster to build. and not have any problems like I did with this build.. Some days. it seemed like I took one step forward..and 3 steps back..lol

I tryed to order them out of a company in California..But they told me there was out.and would be $1698.00 before shipping!! That they was on a ship form china.. So I went to Alibaba , I already had account there. and ordered them, It cost me $400 shipping.but the total was $806.00 to my door the next week... saved half..and got them quick.. Hard to look at the shipping part. but compared to what it was going to cost me local, I saved half.. I still have there contact info on Alibaba.. really like these Speed Demon rails.. I think they hold up to 450 lbs each..

You made a fine table there!
How do you find those rails with dust on the gantry? I used the cheaper linear rail - 30mm and mine are ready for replacing now after 8yrs I only used a single rail on the gantry and will go for a twin rail one way or another.

They do really good. They have a dust guard that pushes anything off it . But Im good at wiping down my table as its cutting or after.. My last 2 tables were a mess before I realized it. But they are good . Starlab used them on some of there High Dollar tables. Mine is a 3 bearing.. And I think they make up to 5 Bearing rails. Mine is good for up to 340 lbs I believe..

We used to use them on tables up until 2019. (Star Lab CNC) It is an old Thompson rail design originally made in South Korea. In 2017 a few chinese companies started copying the design (Like the ones you have). There are a few issues the the chinese clones. They are not retrofitable from mfg to mfg. They generally are not equal in distance between the rails over a long length. The bearings are cheap bearings with steel seals and the seals are just rubber scrapers (Unlike the Korean versions that have 10MM thick spring loaded oil filled wipers). We switched to 100% Hiwin in 2020 for a few reasons.

1. Getting a consistent supply from Korea is impossible
2. Speed Guide bearings require preload to be rigid and will require more effort to move and change direction
3. Reciprocating ball type rails have a super long life, do not require much preload to be rigid and are well stocked
4. The chinese counterparts were horrible but more available

There are also chinese clones of hiwin rails. There are only a few factories that make profile linear rails like you would find from a supplier like Hiwin. These factories take orders from anyone. But its like the wild west. If you buy a no name rail expect preload values to be all over the place. One truck may be good and meet your requirements and another may be loose or not even fit the rail. Making production machines for longevity means having the parts in inventory to keep machines running. One off machines are fun to build and I commend you! But production machinery built in a factory sense has to have some legacy behind it. Those Mfgs that are building with the chinese clone rail are in for a huge wake up when their customers are needing replacement parts and the preload cannot be properly set or the parts simply do not fit. We take a different angle and stand by the machine for years to come not weeks to come.

I love to see folks building their own machines it is fun to see the progress and good and bad ideas (Mostly good) being implemented. It can be quite rewarding if enough thought was done to the design. It can also be a huge loss. But these pages surely do help. We like to help when we can as well. What Mfgs do that? hehehe Have fun and happy cutting!

Great info there from both of you many thanks!
Sounds like I should be looking at the genuine hwin in my case then, my table has paid for itself many times over and runs 8hrs a day a few times a week.

I looked at starlab tables as the inspiration for my table, mine doesn’t come close in build quality but it is the best I could do out of my garage. But I noticed they use hiwin rails so that’s what I went with. I ordered mine from a company called Motion Constrained. They were the cheapest that I could find for genuine hiwin rails and just ordering a small amount. https://motionconstrained.com/

UPDATE ON MY HOME BUILT TABLE < It has been over a year now ,that I built my 4x10 table. with Proma MyPlasm controller and THC.. This table has been awesome ! No problem, except user errors at times, but alway fix myself. The rails are the best out there..No wear in them or any problems. It great to build something, and work every time I use it. I have cut a ton of items with this table ,and its the best feeling to have built something better than I could buy. I have $5200.00 in my table and new Hypertherm 45XP. It just keeps getting better. I would like to see other build there own tables also. I do have a email list I put together on everything I bought and you can click on anything and it will take you too that webpage. anyone interested in my list. Pm me your email address.. Ill send it to ya, at no cost.. just like helping others.

UPDATE ON TABLE ! Its been over 2 years now since table build ! Rails and such has been flawless.. NO Problems from anything., except couple users errors. Im very Happy with it and would not change anything on it. I have cut so many sheet in last few years and mostly small items.Just saying...Cant afford a table and can weld. Might think about building your table. I just like a solid table , and not light weight. Thanks everyone..

Thanks for the update bringing the thread to my attention. Looks like an awesome build. Wonder what it would cost with todays prices? Picking up a few sheets of steel tomorrow and see prices have jumped a bit again. Still not where they were thankfully.

Sorry just seen this.. Yea im sure its going to be higher in price. but you can have way better if you build yourself the right way. and you have a choice of what parts you want to install that will last for years. Im super Happy with my Rails. and they are adjustable for any wear. Proma MyPlasm is what I use in control panel. And after having 2 other new tables for a few months. and being junk. This MyPlasm is by far the easiest and best I have ever used. and simple. It uses Dxf files. I also have a flat screen TV on wall behind table to view my cutting..

I was looking at the Proma Myplasm set up for controls and THC and was concerned with the proprietary software. Does it have the ability to add another axis for pipe/tube cutting?

You mentioned no wear on the adjustable rails after a couple of years of use. What rails did you use?

Nice table by the way.
