1300x1300 Table Design

Post by Thermionix »

Hi all, planning a table build in QLD, Aus
Work Area 1300x1300mm
Frame made from 40x40x3mm RHS

Sort of unsure about teeth selection for Rack&Pinion and the viability of the mini actuator for the Z
Would be making a torch breakaway similar to this thread

looking at getting quoted up from Aliexpress HLTNC (Deals with orders for PrintNC Builds) for:

Z Axis:
1 pcs nema17 42hs48 stepper motor 0.55Nm 5mm shaft
1 pcs Mini Actuator 150mm MGN12 guide 1605 Ballscrew
1 pcs GB20*25-5*8 Coupling

Remainder:
3 pcs PX57 planetary reducer 1:4
3 pcs 1400mm 1.25MOD Helical Gear Rack
3 pcs 1.25Mod Helical Teeth Gear 25 Teeth 14mm hole (5mm keyway)
3 pcs 57hs112 3Nm stepper motor 8mm shaft
4 pcs DM542 stepper driver (or DM556 ???)
3 pcs 1400mm HGR20 Linear Guide Rails
6 pcs HGH20CA Linear Guideway Block
5 pcs SN04-N Inductive Proximity Sensor Detection Switch
1 pcs LA38-11ZS 22mm emergency stop button
3 pcs R55 25mmx77mm Drag Chain
2 pcs 10 meter UL2464 4 core 4x1mm^2 double shielded cable

Y Gantry 1500mm * 40x40mm V-Slot
Or may just go 60*40*3mm alluminium tube? can use t-slot nuts with v-slot whereas would need nuts inside the alloy tube

Water Pan, 75mm Deep - 1.6mm mild sheet with angle around the perimeter, 75mm flat bar slats
Dell Laptop (Running linuxcnc-2.8.2-buster)
Mesa 7I96 + THCAD-10 + THCAD-5 (ohmic)
Cisco 6500 1300w (42V 27.5A, 12v 6A, 5v 5A, 3.3v 15A)
Meanwell HDR-15-24 Isolated 24v (for ohmic)
Everlast PowerPlasma 62i
IPTM80 Machine Torch

Build wise have AC/DC Tig, Horizontal Bandsaw, Folder and access to Mill

Need to start making some CAD models but looking at raising the X axis up from the waterbed similar to this design

G'day from across the rabbit-proof fence...I'm in WA.

I'm probably not much help to you regarding the parts you have listed, but I'll tell you about the parts I used to build my own plasma cutting table. It has a footprint of 1800 x 1800mm and a working area of 1340 x 1340mm....easily takes half a sheet of material.

The frame and gantry are constructed from 100 x 100 x 3mm box section and the frame is bolted together. This sits on a support table fabricated from 50 x 50 x 3mm box section. Probably a bit of overkill, but that's just me...I tend to overengineer everything!
The water pan is 1500 x 1500 x 100mm deep and uses 50 x 3 flat bar on edge, for the slats.

My gantry runs on linear rails and bearings and my Z axis is a prefabricated unit with 100mm of travel.
My drive system for the X and Y axes are 1605 ballscrews and these work very well. My Y axis runs 2 motors; 1 on each side, to keep the gantry straight and maintain stability. The X and 2 Y motors are NEMA23, 420in/oz, 4.2A units, connected to DM556 stepper motor driver units.

The control system is a MyPlasmCNC controller and plasma interface unit from Proma Elektronika and my plasma cutter is a Unimig Razor Cut 45. This cutter has a built in CNC port, so connecting the cutter to the interface unit is very easy. The cutter has a built in 20:1 arc voltage divider, so the arc voltage is quite low, which is a good thing.
The torch height controller works off the arc voltage and does a great job at maintaining the correct cutting tip to material clearance.
The MyPlasmCNC controller uses .dxf files for its toolpath, making the system easy to use and operate.

I'm using the standard hand torch and I adapted the stand off guide to make my own ohmic sensor, which to date, is working very well. The only issue I've had, is when I cut aluminium, some of the dross can stick to the fingers of the stand off guide and if it builds up too much during a cut, it can short out to the tip, which causes a 'material detection alarm' that stops the machine.

I created a series of 6 'how to' videos of the build, and these are on my YouTube channel, Rusty's Metal Cut Signs & Designs (shameless plug). I sort of copied someone else's design so maybe you might find some of my videos helpful with your build.
If you have any questions about my build, I'd be happy to answer them, either here or contact me privately.

Hope this helps.

regards

Rusty - nice set of how to videos on your build! You are doing a pretty good job for a "CNC Newbie".

Thank David
My background is Instrument/Electrical and I've always been pretty handy in the shed, but the CNC part was all new to me.

For a first attempt, I was pretty happy with the table's build and performance. I'm having fun designing and cutting 'stuff'.

Hi, I'm in Brisbane. You are welcome to visit, Send a PM.
Some of your specs seem to be a bit undersized
I use a Mesa 7i76e, THCAD-10 and THCAD-5
From the extensive modelling we did, I'd rather see you use a nema 23/24 on the x & z axis, 30-40mm dia pinion
for the x axis on gantry, I would suggest nema 23 with 3:1 reduction (5:1 is ok)
For the Y axis (2 motors on table), small Nema 34's with 5:1 reduction, 30-40mm dia pinion
Dm542's would be fine with a 48 volt power supply. 60-70 volt with bigger drives will increase performance,
My table is 1300 x 1300 too. 100 x 100 x 4mm frame
My gantry is 40mm x 80mm x 4mm Ally RHS from Action Aluminium just up the road from me
For couplings, I'd recommend this style

I have some nice Sanyo Denki NEMA 24's that punch way above their weight I could do a deal on, These are capable of 60m/min rapids and 5m/sec^2 acceleration.
