GX16 Connector PCB

Post by FabLab »

Hi All,

I use GX16 (Aviation) connectors on my home brew plasma table and it seems like every time I need/want to make a change inside the electrical cabinet I end up breaking a solder joint on one or two pins off.....
Well I finally got tired of that and created a PCB with GX16 connectors on one side and terminal strips on the other side.
I did my best to make it as versatile as possible...

I thought someone else might find the PCB useful so here is a PDF of the schematic and a .zip of the required Gerber files...

If you have any questions let me know..

+1, I use them in many different pin configurations
2,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10 pin.... trying to solder then and heat shrink the cables can be difficult

I use hot glue to seal the connections after the original connection is made, I think the term is called "Potting". This works very well for the female side of the connector, before I install the cable clamp part I fill the connector with hot glue.

Any tips on how to order the PCB (I read the .txt) I mean specifics board style type etc. ?

I figured out the ordering process, any interest in selling one of the boards?

Thanks for sharing this! I can see that you have put much effort into creating this board and it shows. My feeling is that if you were to go ahead and have some printed, there is undoubtedly a market for them.

Check on the web there seem to be some companies offering low prices for small PCB runs that would fit right in with this.

I had them made by JLCPCB, I've had several boards made by them always been very good quality boards.

To order go to https://jlcpcb.com/
Click the add gerber file button and choose the .ZIP I provided
The only options I would suggest changing is the board color to a color of your choice and clicking the "Specify a Location" button. specifying a location will put the JLCPCB order number on the back of the board.. Not required but it looks cleaner.

I did have a hard time finding GX16 connectors for a PCB here is a link to the ones I purchased:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2251832 ... 4itemAdapt

Here are the terminal blocks I purchased:

2 Pin Terminal Block:

I do have 3 extra boards if anybody wants on PM me and I can get one to you.

I buy those plug/jacks from eBay you can select the pin number and they have different sizes too. I like the GX 20 for easy soldering (old shaky dude)

Not sure, but I think you need to become a Contributing Member to see pictures and links. The cost is only $20 per year, and well worth it in my opinion.

The Amazon links work now but the AliExpress link still doesn't.

Those pcb gx16 connectors are hard to find.

So, I soldered the board to together today & I realized I am an idiot (sort of) for whatever reason when I did the design all I had in my head were TTL logic traces, VCC, & Ground... I didn't give any thought to the stepper connections... Why? I don't know...

That doesn't mean the original design is no good, but if you want to use the original design here are my recommendations:

(1) For stepper connections don't use pins 1 & 2 (VCC & GND) use pins 3-6 on connectors 1,5,9,13, and 17
(2) Have the PCB manufactured with 2 oz copper instead of the default (1 oz)
(3) Use bodge wires for the stepper connections.
(4) Don't use my original design, use the new design that I will attach to this post.

Here are the specs:
Original Design - Trace Width of 10 Mils (.254mm)
VCC & GND Flooded Copper
1 oz copper traces:
Max current = 1.4 amps (Calculated using 25 Deg C Ambient with a 10 Deg C Rise)
Resistance = .106 Ohm
Voltage drop = .145
2 oz copper traces:
Max current = 2.3 amps (Calculated using 25 Deg C Ambient with a 10 Deg C Rise)
Resistance = .050 Ohm
Voltage drop = .121

New Design - Trace Width of 40 Mils (1.016mm)
VCC & GND Flooded Copper
1 oz copper traces:
Max current = 3.7 amps (Calculated using 25 Deg C Ambient with a 10 Deg C Rise)
Resistance = .278 Ohm
Voltage drop = .103
2 oz copper traces:
Max current = 6.2 amps (Calculated using 25 Deg C Ambient with a 10 Deg C Rise)
Resistance = .013 Ohm
Voltage drop = .084

What I ended up doing was ordering new boards with 2 oz copper & if you want to use this design my strong recommendation is to do that (Use the new design wit 2 oz copper)

If I caused anyone any problems or cost anyone any money with my first design I am truly sorry!
