dashboard

Post by tomloewen »

I bought a 1972 Glastron boat. I wanted to add a couple gauges and rocker switches to the dashboard, but I couldn’t because of the location of the existing holes. So I thought the best thing to do was to design a new dashboard and fasten it right over top the old one.

I got a piece of ½” aluminum plate and had it power coated to match the boat. After I designed the dashboard, I brought the dxf file and the aluminum plate to a local CNC routering company. Even though I went over the file a number of times to make sure I had no goof up’s, I did end up with one. In the recessed portion for the rocker switches, I should have offset the top and bottom lines by 1/32”, or even a 1/64”. I found that the rocker switches barely catch the dashboard as you engage them. They still work, and they’ll wear into place . . . but it would have been nice if I would have caught that one error.

I'm still working on it . . . I have too many on-going projects  so I don't have all the gauges and switches install yet. I intentionally extended the new dashboard passed the bottom edge of the existing dashboard. I was after a retro, or art deco look . . . I think I basically got it but after it was cut out, I can see a couple little changes I could have added.

If I recall, I got the matching steering wheel from amazon.
