Octogonal Firepit

Post by levesquea »

Had to fabricate a closed firepit as we're not allowed to burn open fires at this time of the year.

Wow! Nice job, it looks spectacular. Where do you get that wire mesh? I'm guessing you just carefully tack weld it onto the frame?

It's called flattened expanded wire mesh. You can get that from your local metal distributor. Here in canada I paid $136 cdn for a 48" x 96" sheet.
i trid to tack weld it but it melts pretty easily. So i cut some flat bar strips and welded them on top of the mesh to the metal structure. Worked up pretty well. Withe the concrete foundation nd metal work...I'm at $500. But the work involved is quite involved from the concrete form and pouring concrete and making the metal frame. That's my first metal project that required more than cutting a flat sheet of metal...lol

Thanks for the info on the mesh, will give that a try for an upcoming project. Wow you went to a lot more work than I had thought on this project! Super impressive!

Nice work! Was there any cnc cutting involved, or was it all hand work? You've got a nice looking workspace there.

Beautiful project and setting! Nice concrete work. Do you load the wood by lifting the dome or is one of the vertical panels hinged like a door? Nice clean design!

Thank you for the kind comments. it was en enjoyable project.

The structure is made in two parts. The surrounding octogonal panels and a removable top with handles to facilitate the process.
In order to load the wood, i have two panels side by side on hinges. I swing them open and I can use it to load the wood and alo I have two stainless pipes recessed in the concrete right in front of the opening doors so I can add some cooking implements. the reason i made a removable top it to eventually build a crank hoist to have a dutch oven lowered over the fire.

Thanks david.
i used my plasma cam to cut the octogonal center cover shape.
All the rest is basically angle Iron with flat bar cut , bent at 22.5 degrees and finally assembled with welds.
My workspace is a bit challenging. i have a 48x96 wood cnc, a plasmacam 48x96, a forge, wood kiln, sandblast, Powder coating oven and a small painting booth..... in a space of 28 x 36. it's quite tight and very difficult to do my finishing because of the wood dust. I'm retired and mainly work mixed media type stuff that i sell locally. Stuff like signage, wall art, decor etc.... But I'm having fun...lol

You look so young - you must have taken an "early" retirement.
