Copper from Canadian Parliament Building roof -> Christmas Ornament

Post by greg9504 »

Video of cutting some 20 gauge (0.032"/0.8mm) copper sheet that came from the roof the Canadian Parliament buildings. Settings for cutting copper below.

Copper sheet, 20 gauge, 0.032" thick (1.5 lbs per square foot).
Cutting parameters:
175" per minute feed rate
0.15" pierce height
0.06" cut height
0.7 second pierce delay (Langmuir systems have long pierce delays).
40 Amps Hypertherm Powermax 600 with Duramax Torch
Regular shielded consumables (not fine cut)

Slight dross, seems to come off easy. Probably could have upped the feed rate a bit, but overall worked well.
These were cut for a charity auction.

Very nice cuts, I have never had great success on copper. Thanks for sharing your settings, I may take another try at it.

Yes the cuts came out pretty good for a first try. I hope the settings can help :)

Nice work! I have never cut copper, but I am guessing that a sheet of copper is much higher cost than steel or ss. Lucky you got some used to repurpose.

Thanks! I haven't priced it lately, but last I checked it was stupid expensive. I actually have about 8 3'x8' sheets of 0.06" copper that I picked up cheap as surplus from a local fab company about 6 years ago. I'm too afraid to do anything with it because I know the replacement cost is so high :).
