Hey all !
over the course of the last year or two I've been custom fabricating steel mounts for a fellow selling commercial LED lighting. Some of the mounts brackets have a tapped / threaded hole that needs to be drilled and tapped.
The tap, about the size of your thumb requires a ton of torch when being turned in to 3/16th thick material. Having done this by hand for the last 24 months, going through a number of taps at $35 a piece in the process to say nothing of the time and utter frustration, I went to some of our local tool suppliers looking for an answer.
Not finding what I was after it was on to the internet and here's what I came up with. While this tapping arm cost about $1700, the cost in time and frustration has made it (for me at least) and incredibly worthwhile investment !!!!!
Not coming from a shop background, I wish I'd heard about this gizmo earlier...
It's VERY well made, came with a great variety / sizes of collets for all the different sized taps. I've gone from 5 - 10 MINUTES per hole, down to 15- 30 SECONDS ...max ! ...and I haven't broken a tap yet !
Cheers... hope this helps someone else out down the road.

Re: Tapping Head
Here is the link to where I purchased the pneumatic tapping arm:
http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/E ... 63634.html
Copy and paste that in to your address header and it's all yours from there.
The arm works on your shop air supply and is super easy to set up and operate. Again, I've been impressed by the quality of the product both in operation and its components. NO... I'm affiliated with the company.
You can no doubt find a link on You Tube to see how these operate.
Hope that helps.
