1/4 inch Plasma cutting with 65amp hypertherm

Post by Munnin88 »

Hi everyone!

Does anyone one have any tips for my settings to cut 1/4 mild steel? I seem to be having some trouble getting my torch to cut through on the longer runs. Anything will help and be appreciated!
Cheers,

Cheers,
I use the Hypertherm recommended settings from their mechanized cut charts for most all of my cutting using my Powermax 85. In addition, make sure your consumables are in good shape and that you have a continuous supply of clean dry oil free air to your cutter.

As these guys said, using the Hypertherm cut charts as a starting point is the way to go and Segoman posted the link above. It sounds to me like you may be traveling too fast on your straights, I see they suggest 90 ipm, what are you cutting at?

Than you very much guys, I went back to the original settings as suggested from the 110ipm I was using, lesson learned, sometimes slower is faster in the end! Thanks again!

Thor, do you get a lot of dross at that speed? That is another issue i am having as well as a poor bevel on my inner geometry

Very little.

If I run 125 volts, I get big edge taper on outer profiles. 127 makes it fairly square. On my machine, your mileage may vary.

If your inner geometry is smaller than say 1" be sure your machine is slowing down for these cuts approx. 50-60% and this may help to eliminate your bevel. Also pause the machine mid cut and get some feeler gauges and be sure your cut height is at .060". Proper cut height and proper slow downs for inner geometry is important. Also proper cut direction is important, CCW for interior cuts. Keep tweaking and documenting what works :Like
