Slag problems

Post by SandiM »

We are new to the game. We are having problems when we have a longer cut with the slag causing the material not being able to separate. The small cuts seem to cut just fine and come out pretty smooth. What can cause this. I included a picture for reference.

Could be a couple of things. I suspect your cut speed is too fast and/or your cut height is too high. Your software is likely slowing down the torch for the smaller cuts which is why they are cutting ok but on an open run its at full speed and too fast. Drop your cut speed down 10ipm and see what happens. What plasma cutter are you using?

Causes may include cutting too high, incorrect consumables and/or air pressure, cutting too fast, etc. Specifically what material and thickness are you attempting to cut, what plasma cutter are you using, and what settings are you using for cut height, pierce height, cut speed, current setting amps, pierce delay time, air pressure at entrance to plasma cutter?

OK, but what plasma cutter are you using? Hypertherm, Thermal Dynamics, Everlast...

Before you start cutting art files, start with 2" circles and 2" squares. Get te machine setting dialed in so you get consistent clean cuts of those shapes. How large is your compressor? Do you have a way to monitor the air pressure coming into the plasma cutter WHILE it is cutting, to see if it is maintaining the minimum pressure needed?

Where are you located? I drop in to help people with issues if it is a short drive!
