New Build - Gantry question

Post by ClarKent101 »

Hi all, I have a table I'm about to put together with a Hypertherm 45xp plasma cutter. I started this project a while back but intend to finish it now.

The gantry and motors I have still yet to source - is there an "easy" way out of this? I'm thinking of using aluminium extrusion for the gantry and then having plates cut to mount it to the sides, then sliding on a linear rail.

What size typically would I use for the motors, are there any kits available to take a lot of this work out of it. Does anyone have any recommendations for the size of gantry that would typically be required?

Thanks.

Ok I will throw out my method, I use a totally welded steel table. The reason is with all the quick movements a Plasma CNC makes, bolts come loose. I have built both 4X4 and 4X8 table, would not go below a 4X4, because of the sheet size (4X8 normally, cut in half or quarters for easy of handling). I use nema 23 425 oz-infor the Y and Z axis, and nema 43 965 oz-in for the X .

and I use the UCCNC type interface, and use the BOB board from the kits to this will give you more input and output pins. This is what I use you con hook 2 BOBs to it. https://www.cnc4pc.com/uc400eth-etherne ... ler-b.html module and software is about $220.
the 4X4 table I have now I use for Plasma cutting (Water Table), wood Routing, Drag Knife, Metal scribe, Pen Plotter, and now Laser etching. These are made easy by having the optional mounts to change out.

Nice build! why would you go Nema 43 vs. Nema 34 of similar torque? I notice a lot of people go Nema 34.

I'm using the Mesa Ohmic sensor as well with Linux CNC. Need to source the z axis guides as well - any good sources for these?

Tom - do you use some sort of "idler" to tension the chain drives?
Thanks,
David

Yes sir at each end of the chain is a 3/8" bolt that is used to tension the chain. Having a dual drive (each side of the table) these tensioners can slightly adjust each side to keep a parallel for cutting square with the table. I also use a 1" flat bar to support the chains full length, the stops any flop when changing direction. Excuse the pink paint, what the lady wanted. :Yay
