Sheetcam - Open lines - Open paths

Post by Plasron »

My brother and I have wasted so much metal TRYING to get an American Tattered Flag, I went in Inkscape and connected all the nodes, brought up Sheetcam and went through setting up operations, inside and outside.
The picture below is what I get, notice where the lines representing the stripes in the flag is mostly empty, a test run in Mac3 cuts it like Sheetcam shows it. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance
Ron

The error code you are getting indicates you have some open lines, and some lines are either too close together or too small to machine. You need to be aware of your plasma kerf width when you design something. Looking at your picture, it appears there are a lot of bits and pieces of lines on your stripes.

There are a lot of tattered flags files on this site, some better than others. Do a search and take a look at a few and see how they handled the stripes.

Thank You WyoGreen
I wish I had never got involved with Plasma cutting, I don’t know how much more money my brother is willing to spend before he decides this stuff is way over our heads, I’m ready to give up on this waste of time and money hobby.

Most hobbies cost money. We all experienced the learning curve when we started. I still have a duh moment every so often.
Stick with it. It gets easier.

Where did you download the tattered flag from. I downloaded a regular flag from here. One thing is that I did differently is NO OFFSET and make it all one layer. Try it and see what happens. YMMV.

If you are cutting a line you use the no offset and they need to be cut all as one layer, They only have a start and end so if you use outside or inside they are closed start and end is the same place. To separate lines from the others use the contour function in Sheetcam to create a layer with all lines.

Thanks for the encouragement guys
I think I got one of the tattered flags here, I never thought of cutting on the lines, NO Offset, I will give that a try, do I do a lead in and lead out or no lead in and out.
Thanks again for the encouragement

If it's just a line, you don't want leads.

Good news, cutting on the line (no offset) worked great, some of the cuts didn't cuts left chads, but that was because of dirty files, If I go back and connect the lines and clean up the files there shouldn't be any problems with cutting.
Thanks so much for all you guys help, Greatly appreciated.
