Sheet cam closing open paths on import

Post by Sampson Jones »

Ive cut this several times with no problems . Today upon import it tries to close open paths . I start in corel , join curves , combine , save to thumb drive . All looks good , until sheetcam import , which tries to add lines to open paths .

You can see many overlapping lines and parts that are moved around. have you tried to save in a different format (DXF,SVG) and some DXF formats have different years in their titles which make a difference too.

I just had issues yesterday making a simple square on my laptop(not connected to my table) with inkscape. Then I "save it as" to my jump drive and then walk to my barnshop and load as I always do to the table PC. Well for the life of me I could not get sheetcam to open the simple square with 4 holes, it would not open the image at all. I then went into inkscape on my table PC and thought I did not have object to path or something. Did that and saved it and went to sheetcam again. Still no good. I think my jump drive is corrupt. However ever since I updated my Command CNC to 1.2.2 I have some strange issue happening. Some of my pierce delays are gone as well.

Ok , in corel i saved if from a cdr to a dxf , then reopened the dxf in corel and it has to open paths closed , screwed up . I wonder why corel is doing this ? And why is the circles all over the imported svg file in sheet cam ?

Saving a cdr from Corel to dxf and then opening that dxf in Corel is going to cause problems. Saving designs as a different format has the software interpreting things as best it can but its never perfect especially with dxfs.
What happens if you simply save your cdr (the original) as dxf and open in Sheetcam? Or is that what you did the first time?

Apears to be a corel problem , when i do a save as it closes open paths on a combined drawing. When I do a save as on a grouped drawing it does not save any open paths ? WTF ? Been doing this along time and it just did this yesterday . Where to start ? Moving to the corel page , I guess.

Did you ever resolve this? Im experiencing same problem going from ViaCad to SheetCam.
And I do believe my sheetcam was updated, is that bad?

When you want to attach a file.image click on the Full Editor & Preview button, that will bring up a screen with an Attachments button. Click on that and you will see a add files button click on that. It will open a screen where you can add one file at a time. Now some files will need to be processed using WinRar (or another Zip file formatter ) some images will not load if they are to large also. Try resizing them with an image program.

Here it is, its pretty much a squiggly line and two circles. Sheetcam connects the ends of the squiggly line.

Are you saying that sheetcam adds an extra line here?

Exactly a you stated, when I opened the file in sheetcam it would add the additional line. I grouped the file in Viacad before exporting. But I have never used Link or Join.
Is linking/joining a cad option or sheetcam?
I will load the linked/joined file into sheetcam and see the results.
Thanks

!!!UPDATE!!!
I just uploaded your file into Sheetcam and it all looked good. Thanks much for your time and patience.
I am still curious about the link/join option, and how I do it.
Thanks

This type of problem has be talked about before here. There seems to be some slight differences between software file formats. Un- expected lines appear in SheetCam. Sometime it's a difference between DXF and SVG, sometime between the version dates of the DXF file save format. Some have used a conversion bridge software (another CAD) to pass a file through before SheetCam. I don't think we can point a finger directly one area. just one of those whoops moments. I use TurboCad for drawing some projects and it looks like lines are connected, even when I use the join polylines command and click on each line to complete the item, with the finish button. Only to find they are not connected with the next software I use. A work around is to use the fillet function (very small ) to connect the line, mainly shows in the 3-D software is use. No answer just an observation :HaHa

When I open you file with Design Edge, it has some individual paths that have not yet been joined together.
18 intersections.jpg

The zero length nodes are located at the intersections between each individual path.

After linking the individual paths to join them into one continuous path, this is what it looks like.

Since you do not have Design Edge, another option is to use LightBurn to accomplish this. You can purchase LightBurn for $60 and it is well worth the money. Open your dxf with LightBurn, then export as dxf and your file will be automatically linked together.

Open your dxf file with LightBurn.

Export as dxf.

I have opened the exported dxf with Design Edge to check it.

Here is the LightBurn download link. You can try it free for 30 days and then decide it you want to purchase it. Cost to purchase is $60.
In addition to the linking of paths, it is great for creating and editing drawing files as well. It also has a great auto trace feature (auto trace/vectorize) for converting jpeg/bitmap files to vector format and exporting in dxf or svg format.
