Here is a good video showing in more detail how to manually trace and edit the nodes to create smooth curves.

I probably left out a few steps, like the screen shot I forgot to put in showing how to connect the D to the a. But hopefully you get the idea. You can also select 2 nodes and delete the segment in between, as opposed to my process. That reminds me of as show that was on several years ago called "Mr Inbetween" or something like that.

Good luck with your adventure, and let us know if we can help.

Is there a quick way to select all of the nodes to be deleted rather than having to click on each one to select them? I know I can use shift to select multiple nodes before clicking remove, but I thought maybe I could select the entire name with one click. All I can seem to do is delete the entire path.

Nevermind. I just figured it out. Shift+Click & drag...

Trying this on a different design. I have the names and date placed where I want them, but I'm having trouble connecting it all together. Do you really have to go node by node to join the letters to the curves? I'm thinking there should be an easier way to do this. Otherwise I'm going to be at this all night. :Sad

Boy, that's really tedious. I'm not a very patient person. I've been messing with this drawing most of the afternoon. I guess that's why I've not done much artsy stuff with my table. Still looking for that magical program that makes this easy.

How can you do in less than 30 minutes, what I've been struggling with all afternoon? You, sir, are amazing.

I think it just takes practice. I was very impressed with how much progress you made using Inkscape in such a short amount of time. Inkscape does not have a trim tool like autocad, de, fusion 360, etc. I will show you how to take your file from Inkscape and import to Fusion 360 to use the trim tool. Then save as dxf from Fusion 360. That's not how I did this one, but it is an option for those wishing to avoid node editing for trimming. I will get back to this later this evening.
Thanks,
David

I have played with inkscape a little in the past, but I recall being just as frustrated then as I am now. I think a trim tool would be a good addition to inkscape. Wonder why it's missing.
I tried tracing the design shown in your instructions, but I kept getting little spots on the top left part of the heart. I even set the brightness and contrast to the same numbers as you show. Maybe the screenshot I uploaded was different than the image I downloaded.

I like to use "Path, Cut Path". Depending on the situation, either a line or a box/circle will work. I have better luck just drawing rectangles. You can rotate and size them to get pretty close, and sometimes you get lucky and it will cut both line segments at the same time - like the one in the example below.

This is to show how you could take your Inkscape drawing and do the trimming using the Fusion 360 trim tool. The entire drawing can be trimmed using this method in several minutes - so might same you some time in the future. The process is import svg to Fusion 360, trim as desired, export as dxf, convert dxf to svg (I use LightBurn for this), open svg with Inkscape for any final editing and sizing, then save as either dxf or svg for import to SheetCam. It took me longer to do the screen shots than to actually do the editing (if I wasn't documenting as I went along).

I agree Tom. I should probably put this in the Inkscape section as well. It's nice to show how several different programs can be used combined together to reach a desired goal. Since Inkscape and Fusion 360 are both available free - I think this combination will appeal to the widest audience. As you know, it can be fun to try to solve some of these situations, and we usually learn a few new things in the process.

I’m not near my computer or else I could tell you exactly what buttons to click, but in the pic above where adbuch has the name over the arched path (like the “Karla” pic) you can first select “Karla” then click union, that will join all of the letters together. Then select the infinity heart, select “Karla” then click union. It will join the two together without having to do any of those extra steps. You should watch some YouTube Inkscape tutorials by “logos by nick” and “bad dog metal works”. After watching those about 100 times you will see how easy it is to create artsy stuff with Inkscape

I will give the union a try with your original file from above to see what happens. I know I've had problems trying to use it in the past. Tom knows a lot more about this than I do, as I think he does a lot of Inkscape work with some of his projects. I've really just been learning as I go with Inkscape. My "go to" is Design Edge which I've been using for about 5 years now. Also, as Tom has said in the past, "there's more than one way to skin a cat".
