Looking for a rainbow file

Post by Desert Toad »

Hope this isn’t too graphic, but a young lady was kidnapped and murdered then buried up a canyon near me. A friend would like to have a memorial made where she was found. She loved rainbows, so the idea is a rainbow with chains hanging down to her name.

I’m having a tough time coming up with a good looking rainbow to cut. Hoping someone has some ideas.

Thanks!

Lots of ideas here. You could draw similar or purchase the dxf at very low cost. Then create your name sign and attach.

A roadside memorial is called DESCANSO. They are usually homemade of PVC tubing to form a cross, or pallet wood, or whatever. They are decorated with ribbons and bows, and toys, etc.

I have toyed with the idea of offering CNC cut descansos for people who want something more permanent than the makeshift stuff they throw together. Either stainless steel, or powder coated. I haven't really pursued the idea though.

I advise against this design. If the name can be REMOVED from the metal art, some Bevis or Butthead will STEAL the rainbow metal art, REMOVE the name and give it to his girlfriend or something.

The thing about stuff like this is, you have to think like a CRIMINAL, if you don't want the piece to disappear. Cut her name into the piece in such a way that removing her name would destroy the piece. That is the ONLY way it will last any amount of time at a place that is not closely monitored.

I don't know how to make a dxf file with detail less than 1mb in size. Is there a secret to this?

What am I doing wrong? Is there an online file sharing site that is reliable? I uploaded it to Google Drive, and provided a link. Does it work for others?

Hmm... I removed the "Show Solid Closed Paths" feature of DesignEdge. Maybe that will do it? Nope. It is still 11.8 MB in size.

Do I have to shrink it down to one inch wide? :-? Nope.

I tried everything I can think of, but the file is still either 11.8 MB or 20MB in size. WTH? :Wow

Hey Joe

I see you were able to upload your 11+ MB file so that is solved, you should have no issues uploading larger files now.

As for why your files are so large I would say that in this case the node count is out of this world. For example the letter N alone has over 4000 nodes when I open your dxf in CorelDraw.

The rainbow itself is next to nothing in size, very few nodes, the text is the issue. See image below and you will see all the nodes on the text. Shrinking the physical size of the design will do next to nothing, it will require node reduction to reduce file size in DXF format.

Joe forgot about the "Smooth" tool in Design Edge. Just type "H" followed by the smoothing factor to reduce node count. So no reason to export any file from Design Edge larger than 1 MB in size.

In my next life I am going to have more MEMORY installed.

That was the problem. I had forgotten about the smoot[H] tool that reduces the node count.

Memory Loss - The struggle is REAL :Sad

I don't "need to learn" anything. Let a little air out of your massively overinflated EGO.

The topic in the thread AT THAT POINT was the node count, and creating .dxf files under 1MB in size.

Okay! I admit it! YOU GOT ME! It is TRUE that I had forgotten about the smoot[H] tool to remove unnecessary nodes, thereby reducing the file size. Okay, you get a ZAGNUT bar. You've ... you've earned it. (Bonus points for citing that movie reference. )

I have several versions of that file in a folder. To figure out why my exported .dxf files were so large, I opened a RANDOMLY SELECTED earlier version of the file and added the star. It was the largest of the bunch.

Then I focused on reducing the node count to produce an exported DXF file under 1MB.

David, are YOU really suggesting that I presented this file as a READY TO CUT file for the OP?

Unless the OP wants to cut a Memorial piece for

Name of Person
Date Year - Date Year

... it should be OBVIOUS to even the slowest and most arrogant among us  that this was a DESIGN CONCEPT file only.

It should be OBVIOUS to anyone with a brain, that these details would need to be REPLACED with the actual text needed, and THEN the entire sign would be checked once again for crossovers and any remaining errors BEFORE the sign was cut, because the TEXT will have CHANGED. It should be STANDARD PRACTICE to do a final check the final design for errors before cutting expensive sheet metal. I don't care WHAT is submitted to me for cutting. I do a final check for errors BEFORE I cut it. What do YOU do, David, when someone hands you a pistol and tells you it is unloaded?

"Joe submitted a cut file with INTERSECTIONS! Ha Ha! I made him look like a FOOL!" - David

Apparently YOU BELIEVE I am suggesting that the OP use MY FILE as it was submitted and place a memorial at a grave that reads,

Name of Person
Date Year - Date Year

The file was OBVIOUSLY presented as a DESIGN CONCEPT for the OP, who was searching for a rainbow themed design despite your glaringly narcissistic and foolishly executed effort to discredit my design skills.

EVEN IF he would cut the file and place a Memorial that reads,

Name of Person
Date Year - Date Year

... based on the kerf width of the torch, the file with the existing text will cut the same, whether or not those two intersections are removed.

Do me a favor, David. Here is a BIG pile of sand. Here is a large rubber mallet. Knock yourself out. :Yay

Joe

Actually, Joe, that's an example of why I haven't posted much here in 4 or 5 years or so. Some clown implied that I was a dumb azz for using Design Edge, so I said sayonara to spider conversation. :Mad I forget to cut the node count down occasionally as well. Still a lot of good info here tho.
You marry into the PlasmaCam family and must accept the fact your software and hardware are proprietary. It's a for better or for worse engagement with overwhelming security. PlasmaCam controls the computer, table, hardware to their advantage IMO. :x

I cannot speak on the other cad programs, except MAYBE for AutoCAD and Google SketchUp, which I have used sparingly in the past. I do not have a lot of experience with those programs. I know almost nothing about Inkscape. I also have not hidden the fact that I have memory issues, and I occasionally, temporarily FORGET things that I once knew very well. After a moment or two, it usually comes back to me. I certainly do not need some arrogant narcissist to come here and tell others what "Joe needs to learn." I've searched You Tube, but I cannot seem to find HIS playlist of (currently) 384 videos designed to train people on how to get more out of DesignEdge.

I do know that DesignEdge is an awesome program for quickly and accurately drawing vector files and more. The people who throw mud at it have almost never used it. I do believe that on a level playing field, if a series of PCs were to be set up, with each PC running a different software program, and a task was given to each person, the one using DesignEdge would almost universally be the first person to create a cut ready file from whatever DATA and parameters were dished out, EVERY TIME. I believe it really is superior to anything else out there, when talking about 2D files. Of course, when we drift into 3D programs like SolidWorks and AutoDesk and Fusion 360 race ahead. The "Full 3D Upgrade" for DesignEdge is more of a 2-1/2 D addition that lets you play with the Z values on a limited basis.

One thing is certain. Every Internet forum will have "that guy." The self-appointed "Mayor" of the forum. The guy who believes you don't have the facts until you have read HIS comments on the subject. The guy who believes he is intellectually superior to everyone else in every way. The guy who merely tolerates the lowly hopefuls who (in his mind only) all yearn to achieve his level of brilliance and understanding of the universe.

He is easily identified. His posts will ALWAYS purport to speak for everyone... "WE are always here to help! ... WE are happy to solve your problem! ... WE are glad WE could be of service! ... I speak only for myself. I do not know if anyone else here is "happy to help," or eager to teach, or to learn.

He will always find some way to have the final word, even if it consists only of nothing but multiple :Like :Like :Like :Like :Like responses. You can sleep better NOW, knowing that HE gave you HIS Five Thumbs Up!

He will trip over himself to point out any flaw, or any error that he believes you may have made, or any point you may have inadvertently or deliberately overlooked, and hold it up high over his head for all to see, as clear evidence of your transparent inferiority.

He will tell you MULTPLE TIMES that you are blocked because nothing that an imbecile like you might post is of any value to a brilliant mind like his, and then he will reply to EVERY post you make in a passive-aggressive way ... proving that you are not only NOT BLOCKED, but you are in fact STALKED, incessantly, and absolutely NOTHING that you post can be allowed to remain unchallenged. Everything you post MUST be evaluated by him, to determine whether or not it is worthy of public consumption. If not, it CANNOT be allowed to stand.

The most FUN part is, You LIVE RENT-FREE in his mind!

I think someone like that can even be found here on Plasma Spider.

Two great things about not having a memory:

2. You never eat the same thing twice.
