Sorry Guys for the delay in a response. I needed the 4.5 center to center. I had to get my hands on the actual light before I could tell. Thanks again for all of your expertise and directions.

I can draw this in inscape in about 30 seconds. Not as fast as Joe by all means. So in inkscape. Draw the 7" circle. Then draw a 4.5 square. Center it to the circle. Now you have a "circle gets the square", Ok showing my age. Remember Hollywood squares. Anyway. Now create another circle (assuming 1/2" here). Right click and duplicate 3 more times. Now you have four 1/2" circles. Now drag them to the corners of the squares and they will snap to the center of the corner of the squares. Make sure snapping is on (there are many choices here at the top but not going to get into it here). Now click on the square and delete it. Then select the whole object and object to path the do a combine. Done.

That still gives us TWO choices

4" CORNER-TO-CORNER, or 4" CORNER-TO-DIAGONAL CORNER?

Could you center the 4.5" square on the 7" circle, or do you NEED to draw the additional 4.5" circle?

Can you snap to the quadrants of a circle? I don't use Inkscape to draw, so I don't know much about the program at all.

Yes, "Align and Distrubute" menu.

Yes. In this case ,snap to the center of the circle on the corner of each square as well as many other choices. Some get a little crazy for me as well.

Whenever God gives me the TIME, I will delve into Inkscape. i know it is a powerful drawing program. I hae not spent any time with it, to know more than the most basic things it can do. I sure admire people who have memories.

Joe,
I did some screen shots. However I am not as good as others posting here. I am assuming 4.5" on center with .500 holes. I drew the circle. Note I have the table dimension saved 48x96 hence you see the rectangle.
Here is the circle.
firstcircle.jpg
Here is the 4.5" square
secondsquare.jpg
The Circle Gets the Square.
With snapping on you can just drag the square in the circle and it will display "Bounding box midpoint to Bounding box midpoint"
Or you can use align and distribute by selecting them both with the circle selection being the last one to center on. Then just click center on vertical axis and center on horizontal axis.
threecirgetssquare.jpg
Now draw the .500 hole/circle. I draw one then right click and duplicate till I have 4 total.
4holes.jpg
Drag each circle to the each corner of the square. If your snapping is on you will see "Bounding box midpoint to bounding box corner" and the red x in the center. Unclick the mouse. Do this for each corner with the circles.

Ahh... I see! So it does have a centering feature, but it centers the bounding BOXES rather than the actual shapes.

Now click/select the square and delete it. You are not done yet. Select the large circle and do and Object to path. Do the same with the small circles. Then Select the whole object and do "Path ==> Combine" then you are done. Save as SVG or dxf.

T.J. - This is a great explanation!! I don't speak Inkscape as my "first language", but I will give this a try. Thanks for sharing your technique with us.

T.J. - I have tried this several different ways using Inkscape, but when I save as dxf and open with DE, the dimensions always seem to be off by the stroke line width. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
David

Dave,
I save as SVG all the time. As I have CandCNC set up so I always used SVGs. DXFs and Inkscape and not friends, at least in my eyes.

Could you please share your svg for this so I can take a look. I'm just trying to see if I am following the correct procedure you outlined above or if I am doing something wrong as far as setting the line width before I draw it in Inkscape.
Thanks,
David

Stroke width i use is .002". I usually never play with this after I set it. I do spot check it once in a while or if I am playing around. I then always revert back to .002"

Thanks for that information! I opened your file and it looks much better than what I was getting. I guess I need to experiment with my stroke width and perhaps some other settings as well.

When i bring that exact svg into sheetcam and make my plan and post process i get no errors or open paths. Not sure why design edge states there are open paths.

In general, most folks experience no problems importing these to Sheetcam. But in the past, there have been instances where this has created a problem - particularly for those more complex files with many hand drawn features. For those without access to Design Edge, you can import the file from Inkscape into LightBurn and then export as dxf and the file will be automatically joined/linked upon export.
