Post by Binderman »

Anyone done one yet? May have to sit down over Christmas break and see if I can remember how to lay one out.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanks all!!

I have seriously considered getting one of those at one point, and I did a good amount of research on them, but I decided that it really would only hold about 3 of the drawers in my toolbox as well as the top… (all my sockets and ratchets, all my wrenches, all my screwdrivers, and maybe one other drawer) but it would have the same footprint as my entire top box.

If the size of the “wedge” is let’s say 18” deep, 30” wide and 20” high that’s nice, but the entire front half of that “wedge” is unusable storage space.

I think where they “might” be a good idea is on a mobile tool truck… maybe…. I still like them though so if anyone has any different opinions on them, I’d love to hear about it!

I agree with Scratch - this looks like maybe a good idea for a mobile tool truck for easy access - sort of like having a pegboard with hangers and bracket normally mounted on a shop wall, but in a portable version. It's easy to see all the tools, but looks like it only holds about 1/2 of what you could fit into a standard top box.

It would also be very convenient for someone not familiar with the contents of a tool box- since all the tools are visible without the need to search thru all the drawers to find a particular tool. But in my case, I have had my tool boxes so long that I know where everything is inside - so this wouldn't be of any particular advantage for me personally.

Cool looking and seems well organized inside but ya it looks like half of a tool box to me. For a guy who needs a fixed set of tools for a specific trade I could see but for a general shop box I wouldn't want one.

This should get you started.
Delete the .dxf on the step file.

They are really handy for working off a mobile utility bed or flatbed farm truck. Everything is organized. Expensive however $$$. Would love to diy my own one day.

Here is a SketchUp file I found today to get started. If you Google Montezuma toolbox cad file it pops up. Can't attach it here.

I want one for my farm truck. If you have a flatbed or work in the field on your own rigs this is the box to have in my opinion.

Many thanks to those that dug up some files...... Didn't think of searching the web.

Here are the gas strut mounts. Pulled them from the stp file here and flattened in Solid edge. Used a 120lb gas spring from mcmastercarr and that seems about perfect holding the lid up.
