Air compressor minimum.

Post by bigronbo »

Looking at a hulk 7.5hp 80 gallon 175 psi compressor. 2 stage 18 cfm . will that work good enough for the 45 amp cutter?

here is an easy guide I stumbled across from a compressor supplier / manufacturer

https://www.sgs-engineering.com/help-ad ... discharged.

please note it uses a mixture of imperial (stone age :) ) units and metric (standard international ) units

if you are in the us.... then be careful with gallons as they are measured in US Gallons which are bigger than an imperial gallon ... (I figured that out when I was looking at engine fuel consumption units in mpg and realised that in the UK we use a smaller gallon)

https://www.hypertherm.com/Download?fil ... &zip=False

if you look at pdf page 24 of the pmx 45 xp operator manual, it asks for

400 scfh at 85 psi as the cutting current

400 scfh / 60 = 6.67 scfm

6.67 scfm X 1.2 = 8 CFM FAD compressor.

6.67 scfm X 6 = 40 litre tank

6.67 scfm X 1.585 = 10.6 US gallon.

or....
6.67 scfm X 1.32 = 8.8 Imperial gallon

I think it will work just fine. I am using the same thing basically. Mine is a Speedaire cast iron series with the same specs but around 27 cfm.
I bought it new over 35 years ago and it is still working great.

Good info from these guys and yes, that compressor will work just fine in my opinion. Be sure to get a good air filter and dryer to ensure clean air. This is very important and is often disregarded and always regretted.
