Plasmacam arc voltage problem

Post by Arcman »

A person I work for has tasked me to try and get machine working.
Hypertherm cutmaster 65
Plamacam DHC+
Talked to plasma cam they said cut wiring, so I checked all wiring inside machine and to control box everything ok.
What I found checking things when you go to diagnostic screen when idle reads 1.19 volts when you pull trigger no change, not sure what to do.
Any help would be great, thanks.

Hi Chris,

I answered your post over in the Owner's Community as well but this information is a little different than what was posted there. We can continue the conversation and I'm happy to help either place. lol

For posterity, here's what I replied over there:

The trigger should be zip tied. Is your torch control cable installed correctly?

If you are saying that when you check the trigger box in diagnostics, the torch fires but the voltage does not change then there is a problem with the torch control cable (broken wire to resistor inside, not plugged in fully and rotated correctly, not wired correctly in the Hypertherm) or with the controller itself (rare but not impossible).

When you say it won't cut - are you saying that it stops and gives an error? If so, what is that error?

In diagnostics screen with torch trigger not activated it reads 1.19 volts when you activate trigger there is no change in volts. I check all wiring inside machine and cable going to control box and everything checks good. Before I started trying to trouble shoot things it would cut for about 4" then stop.

As for error codes it said torch cutting signal was not detected.

OK - it sounds like the controller is not getting the arc voltage feedback from the Hypertherm to the controller. There are resistors under the heat shrink on the torch end of that cable that are quite fragile and can be broken.

Here is a diagnostic sheet for the torch control cable to help troubleshoot that cable.
