Adding to SVG file

Post by Kaos »

I am trying add rectangle frame to an existing svg. file, but I can't get it to do what I want. I would like the paws of the goat to overlay the rectangle. When I position the rectangle and try the "difference tool" the upper part of the goat disappears, I have spent a lot of time on this and still lost.
Thanks for any help.

Try sending your rectangle to the bottom of the stack so it's behind the picture. I always have trouble with inkscape, so this might not be the solution, but it's worth a try.

Yes - djreiswig is correct that if you send the rectangle to the bottom of the stack, you will achieve the look you are after visually.

But to create something cuttable, you will need to do some node editing to achieve your desired result.

Here is an example where I combined the rectangle with the goat to create a single cuttable file. This may not be exactly what you are after, but you can take a look at the attached file and ask questions if you like. Or course this would have been easier if you had posted your svg file. I did it from auto trace.

Great Inkscape tip guys, thanks. I like the design also, my fav would be David's goatpeek2 design. I am more of a Corel guy, this kind of thing is pretty easy in Corel with the "Weld" function.

djreiswig and adbuch, Thank you both for that suggestion, but I had already tried putting the rectangle on the bottom. That's how I'm ending up with picture 3. I still cannot get it.
adbuch that 2nd picture is exactly what I am looking for.
Sorry I didn't post svg file. Adding it now. I must be doing something wrong in the object to path or something. Would love to figure this out.
Thank you.

Kaos - I will take a look at this later this evening and show you how I would do it using Inkscape.

Here is one method to accomplish this using Inkscape. Note: in images 5 and 6, I am working with the copy to isolate the ends of the paws to move them to the working copy we just unioned with the rectangle.

After Stroke to Path for the paw ends, delete the center line for each paw end and leave the closed path.

I just noticed that I forgot to Difference several of the details around the nose and mouth, so they appear black in the Inkscape Normal View. This will not affect the way it cuts. Here is what it looks like when I open it with Design Edge to check.
