New Drum Sander

Post by Joe Jones »

I went up to Missouri to help a friend with his table. Then I swung over to Clever, MO to visit with some friends. Well, Springfield MO isn't far away, and I cannot get so close to Springfield without dropping into Grizzly Tools to see if there is anything I cannot live without.

So there it was, in the "Scratch-n-Dent" department with the most minimal dents in the metal cabinet ... but enough of a dent to take $800.00 off of the price! I picked this baby up for $3,500.00, and bought four additional sanding belts of 60, 100, 120, and 220 grit, for variety.

I just unloaded it from my truck tonight. I am anxious to see how this behaves with 14 gauge steel.

Joe

DANG, JOE. You're going to have to build another building if you keep getting more toys!

I have two shops, a metal shop and a wood shop. The wood shop is affectionately known as the "FrankenBarn." It began as an idea for a 600 sq. ft. wood shop on a concrete pad. That was the concept. A simple 20'x30' single level building. Well, when we began to work on the project we added this ... and that ... and that too ... and as long as we did that, it only made sense to add this as well ...

It turned into a 6,096 sq. ft. four-level building with a full walking attic and a basement. :Wow It will also have an elevator that moves from the basement to the attic. I'm an old dude! I don't do the hand-truck-up-the-stairway stuff anymore. :HaHa

The 32'x48' basement has 9' walls, 10" thick. At the surface, another 12'x32' pad was poured, to make the ground level 32'x60'

I did not intend for the second floor guest bedrooms. But he showed up with these LONG 6"x6" poles, and said he would cut them down. I said, "Oh, Hell no! Let's just add another floor!" Then the attic was an afterthought, for storage space.

180 sheets of 3/4" exterior plywood for the floors. The ground level has a double layer, 1-1/2" thick.

At today's wood prices, I would not be able to AFFORD to build this thing.

Already planned ... :HaHa This extension WAS going to house four Samson 510 CNC plasma tables, with the guest bedrooms and classroom on the upper floor of the FrankenBarn. I was setting up a PlasmaCam Bed-n-Breakfast Seminar training center. I actually purchased four tables from PlasmaCam, but I told them to refund my money when we had a "falling out" several years ago. I may still do this, but it would be next year before I could begin the project.

Sadly, the only thing I have run out of is motivation. I am trying to get excited about this stuff again. It isn't that I cannot do it. it is that I just don't care much about anything any longer. People tell me to "just find something that makes you happy and do that..."

I am watching this country float uncontrolled down the center of a deep and wide river toward a high waterfall just ahead. We are picking up speed, and we will soon teeter over the edge and crash onto the rocks far below. Despite my dire warnings about what lies ahead, and my efforts to get people to grab paddles to help navigate America to the shore before we reach the falls, it seems that everyone is hopelessly focused on the pretty flowers along the river banks.

You sure hit the nail on the head there! I've always tried to keep the attitude that I'm kinda like a baby goose.....every day is a new experience, but it's gettin tougher. I guess I'm just gettin too old.

I have scheduled two small motorcycle rallies in the coming weeks. I have joined the SCRC (Southern Cruisers Riding Club) so I can get out on my Goldwing once in a while and enjoy life. There is a gathering in Maysville, KY this coming week, and a bigger rally in Johnson City, TN later in June. I have signed up for both of them. Sadly, I am going alone. What can I say? Sandra Bullock turned me down, and Cameron Diaz won't return my calls   :Sad

Pretty sure this one is intended for wood only. There have been some discussions on some of the forums about attempts to use the wood sanders for metal by reversing the rotation of the drum or belt (I don't remember which). I will be anxious to find out your results attempting to use this one for metal, in particular dross removal. Good luck.

I have a wood shop and a metal shop. I hope it will work. I cannot imagine that the machine knows the difference between a wood surface and a metal surface. If the metal is run through and the paper just skims the top surface, I believe it will work fine. Time will tell!

Oh, yes! I MET HER! "Anna" ,,, at a campground on a motorcycle tour in 2012. Without going into great detail, I slept in my tent with my GLOCK at my side that night. I didn't want to wake up at 3:00 AM with her over me, stabbing me with a butcher knife yelling, "I! DON'T! TAKE! REJECTION! WELL!!!"

I have not even plugged it in to see it in action. Time ... Time ... Time ... I really do need a helper!

At the moment, the pressure is on me to produce the Halloween props they will need for the cemetery, about 20 large tombstones, and some breathing walls, and a few other nifty things.
