Business sign

Post by Improvise »

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone is able to help me with this one? The text part I have no problem with obviously but the circular logo I can't seem to figure out a way to replicate or at least modify to make it work and still look like the original. I'm fairly new to all this and the sign is for my brother in law as a gift so shouldn't have too many problems with the customer being too picky. I do want it to look good however as this will be representing his business and could potentially lead to a lot of leads for me.
I am looking at doing the sign as a negative text sign and to possibly have LED lighting behind.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Have you made an attempt? And what software are you using for your editing/file vector file creation? What size will your final sign be?

Your supplied image has very high resolution, so a bitmap trace will provide excellent results as far as fidelity goes. The question is - how close do you wish to keep your end result to the original? By that I mean all the detail in the curved area (rings/circles).

This could certainly be cut with all the detail, but then the problem becomes dealing with the actual cutter kerf width and the spacing between the adjacent rings.

Hi David,
I have made a few attempts but not getting the results. I use inkscape. Its really just the circle bit that I'm finding hard to replicate. Here is what I have attempted.
Cheers

I assume you are not pleased with your attempt and are looking for something closer to the original? What will be the overall size of your sign?

So about 48 inches wide. You need to achieve a "happy medium" between the actual original and what you have so far. More detail, but not so much that if falls apart and is not cuttable.

Hi David,
I just realised I can't see your jpg files because I wasn't a contributing member. I have just paid the fee to become a member but it says it may take a couple of hours.
Really appreciate you have taken the time to have a look. Hopefully I'll be able to see the images soon and will respond then.

You could take a look at this to see if it will get you started. You can check your spacing between rings and perhaps adjust to your liking. Let me know if you have any questions. Depending on how you are planning to mount it, some reinforcement or bridging may be required to keep the rings from "flopping around".

Thanks David. I cant seem to open that dxf in inkscape. If you are able to is there any chance you could save it in SVG?

If it doesn't need to be exactly close to the original, then I think yours may look better.

Happy to help! By the way, I used LightBurn to convert from dxf to svg. You can also use Qcad to convert dxf R14 to dxf R13. Inkscape will open dxf R13 format. Let us know if you have more questions, and be sure to show us your sign when you cut it.
Thanks,
David

I really like this version. After all, those thin lines when illuminated from behind will not reveal the detail anyway. The thin bands of light will blur together and you will not get the results you seek. This design is conceptual, and conveys the same message using only three rings that are both able to be cut by a plasma table, as well as SEEN by the human eye. It will look great!

Are you going to put a thin sheet of white acrylic behind the front face? If you leave the can open, it will attract bugs, and dirt. With a white plex pace, you can concentrate your LED lighting to the area directly behind the openings. There is no sense in lighting the entire cabinet interior unless light must pass through the entire face to the outside.

With signage, it is very important to make sure you are in compliance with ALL local sign codes and electrical codes. If the sign is a low voltage sign, then it is less troublesome, but if there is 120 VAC running to the sign, you might not be able to hang it or mount it without a UL Label for compliance with electrical codes. This means the sign MUST be wired by a license electrician. If it is outside, it will most likely need WEEP HOLES at the bottom of the can so rain water can escape.

Signage is a strange thing. If it blocks the view of another business sign, it may be taken down. If it exceeds the maximum square footage allowed for advertising space in that zone, it may be taken down. If it blocks access to fire sprinkler system valves, it will be taken down. If it is not in compliance with local DESIGN CODES, it will be taken down. If it is the wrong color, it may need to be repainted.

I would hate to see you sell the sign, and have the customer threatened with a large fine if it is not immediately taken down. Depending on WHERE it is being set up, there can be problems also. If it is at the end of a driveway for example, it cannot block the driver's view down the road. There are probably local fire codes that you must comply with also.

Setting up a lighted sign is one of the easiest ways to invite the State, City and Local gu'mints to crawl up your shorts. You can't believe how many ways you can violate local sign codes. I see that you are about 10,000 miles away, so your codes may be different, or more relaxed where you are.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for all the advice. The sign will be inside an office so shouldn't have too many problems. I was just going to use led strip lighting taped to the back of the sign following the outer edge of the cut outs.
I'm in Western Australia.
