This is the approach I was taking. But I just received some email notifications that you have posted so I will check those out.

Great instructional video Joe. My main takeaway was your use of the slant tool to unslant the text after creating your grid of lines, then adding the radii, and finally reslanting to create the desired matching font. I never would have thought of doing it that way. I also liked you technique of drawing a quick rectangle around a line to extend its length. Much faster than drawing two separate lines to accomplish the same thing. The power of Design Edge never ceases to amaze me. For anyone serious about vector editing, I think the $3k ticket price is a real bargain.

I would also be interested to see a short video showing your manual trace of the logo portion using the spline tool. I am curious how you have decided which of the shaded boxes in the raster scan you selected to follow as you worked your way around each portion of the artwork. In the past I have generally used the bulge tool for this sort of thing, but it is always good to learn new techniques. And I expect that there are may Design Edge users lurking about who might benefit from your experience as well.

Joe - you mentioned using the spline tool to manually trace the logo artwork, but I seem to have better luck using the bulge tool.

I made a video but then I screwed it all up during editing, so I deleted it. I will try again in a day or two. The spline tool is really the way to go.

I checked out your video. Some great tips for keeping the splines aligned with the image, and that X-Mouse app looks interesting as well.

The only disadvantage I found, was that when you use the BRUSH tool in DesignEdge, you cannot roll the wheel mouse to change the size of the brush as before. However ... if you press the SCROLL LOCK key, the brush diameter size WILL change with the roll of the mouse wheel!

I'm too used to using F1 and F2 to zoom and it is fast and easy with one hand on the keyboard and one on the mouse that I don't want to use the scroll wheel *for me personally* but I see the value!

I have recently become more friendly with the spline tool - the trick that I was missing over the years that kept me happy with the bulge tool is to click a LOT. Defining the spline frame with a lot of clicks makes for a good trace whereas having them much to far apart is unhandy and useless. I can zoom through a trace much faster with spline now that I'm getting used to it. One of my March 2022 class students showed me how she used it and I've been working with it ever since!

I always think in pictures. Maybe because I am left-handed (right brained) ??? The spline tool is like a cork board, a can of push pin tacks and a ball of string. You want to trace the outline of something that you have attached to the cork board. You will use the string to trace the shape, and the pins to determine where the string will fall onto a curve. If the tacks are too far apart, you will get a curve that looks more like an octagon or a hexagon. In order to trace the curve accurately with the string, you have to use a lot of tacks, and place then close together. The tighter the curve, the more tacks you will need. Whereas on straight lines, you only need one tack at each end, and the string will follow the line accurately.

I agree with using the F1 and F2 keys. I'm used to it and it comes "second nature". I still like the bulge tool better since I am used to it, but I will have to start using the spline tool as well. That is the key with Inkscape as well, keeping the clicks very close together when tracing. It does make a big difference.
