Is there a way to clean up double lines faster...

Post by TJS »

I am creating class reunion sign and the mascot is a tiger in which I will incorporate into my sign. Very close to the one I downloaded from Etsy. I did not look at the nodes really cause of course the etsy seller advertised this was cut ready. I went to do a test cut tonite and could not even open it in sheetcam. So I came back in the house on my laptop and did a node simplify in inkscape. Then I look closer and there are double lines everywhere in where I have to remove nodes here and there and then take a look at the overall shape and make sure i am not altering it. I stopped after a while as you can see in the attachment I only got a few done near the top of the head. Not sure if there is another program out there to remove these in one shot.
Thanks.

TJ - I opened you file with Design Edge and I see the same thing. I don't know of a quick method to delete them all at once. I can certainly do it, but may take 15 or 20 minutes for me to do. I'll check it out later this evening.

See if this will work for you. I just individually deleted all the duplicate paths using Inkscape.

I found several open paths that I missed with Inkscape. This one is clean.
You will need to be creative to keep some of the parts from falling out when cut. Perhaps do a layered piece.

A CLEAN version of the tiger logo is probably somewhere in the Internet. Tell me specifically, what is the name of the team, and what school are they associated with?

Thanks David,
I really appreciate it. Do you have an SVG of the last one you did. I see some pieces will fall out. I have the text and other stuff ready in regards to my sign. I will just add the tiger in there when complete. I don't want to make a layered sign as I am going to back up this sign with orange plastic. The sign will be painted black. The school colors were black and orange back then. Since then they changed the mascot and the colors of the High School.
Thanks again.

TJ - I replied to your PM a little while ago with the svg file. I just saw this post now. You could probably glue or otherwise attach the pieces that fall out to the orange plastic backing after painting them. That might be the easiest thing to do.

David,

I checked it out with DE also. There was one noticeable path (stripe on the right cheek) where there was no closed path. I mirrored the other side and placed it correctly, then used the select tool to select all open paths at once and hit delete. selected it all and smoothed it to small margin (.005) in this case, combined a couple odd shapes (upper teeth and left pupil) so they were more like the rest of the drawing, detected intersections, fixed 4 or 5 spots and then it was ready to start any work to make cut ready depending on the application. Took about 3 minutes.

This probably isn't much help for the OP unless they're using Design Edge but wanted to share the steps I took to clean it up, hopefully it helps!

Here is a quick way to remove the double lines.

~Select your object
~Turn off fill and turn on stroke
~Go to node editing
~Zoom in on the object and click one node you want to remove, press CTRL and A to select all, then delete.
~Continue until you remove all the double lines you want to remove.
~Turn on fill to see the outcome.

Thanks again David. I would glue them on the backer plastic but I am not going to be the gate keeper of this sign as they want to possibly reuse the sign for the next reunion. I am afraid the handling of this sign, moving it, etc., may cause the glued pieces to fall off the plastic backer. I will post the complete sign when I am done. Hope to have it cut out soon. Thanks for the help and ideas everybody.

Thanks Joe. I am going to work on this tonite in regards to the drop outs. Hope to stretch them a little to bridge them without changing the shape of the animal. Who knows, if this does not work I might use the flying tiger here. More to come.

Oh? I thought you needed this specific tiger. Will just ANY tiger do?

This tiger is the exact match that was on the back of my Varsity Hockey Jacket and all our sports Jerseys/Uniforms way back when. So yes using this would be great but we will see.

This is all I could find. I was back in the 80's. Since then the mascot has changed.

Robert - I tried your method using the original file (opened with Inkscape and saved as dxf for import to DE). Which program did you use to convert the original svg to dxf for editing with Design Edge?
Thanks,
David

Thanks Tom! I watched your video and that is essentially how I did it. Path Break Apart, then just start deleting. I went pretty fast, so I probably did not always delete the proper version of the particular path. I like the way you zoomed in for a more accurate selection.

Ok. I remembered I had a jump drive I got from RHM(Robin Hill Machine) a few years back. I found a "cat". Here is my sign. I however think the cat will fall out.
