Gas Fire Pit?

Post by SlagBandit »

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. I have a construction contractor who wants one of the square pits but with a gas burner for a customer he has. I haven't built one like this yet but have built many square pits. The picture is similar to what he is wanting. He is wanting to use the glass beads to fill it also and still have the designs cut into the sides. Just wondering if anyone has built something similar? Any info is much appreciated!

Thanks!

I haven't built one like you are asking, but have done quite a few outdoor gas firepits in tile/rockboard w/rock siding. You should be able to just insert the gas burner and fill with glass beads and be done with it. You wouldn't need to do any mods to the drawing except for how/where you will attach the gas/propane. I assume your contractor will have a way to do this so ask him. If it is just notching the bottom for the hose to come through that should be pretty easy. On the bottom of the pit, just make a solid plate with a hole for the gas line to go through (unless it is going to be plumed out the side). The burner should come with mounts that just screw into the bottom plate. Anything less that 14 ga you should be able to use simple self tapping screws. Thicker you will probably need to drill and use some small bolts.

I don't know how the beads will look through the cutout designs on the sides. They may glow but I am thinking they will not so that may be something you will want to test beforehand to see how it looks. If the beads are going to be below the cutouts then the fire will glow through, if the beads cover the cutouts/designs then they may not be very visible. Normally you only have about 4-5 inches of glass beads in the pit, just enough to cover the burner. Burner usually sits about 1.5 - 2 inches off the bottom of the pit. Here's an idea....you could put a plate on the top that is just down 4-5 inches from the top to mount the burner onto, leaving the cutout designs visible below the plate and then put in some LED's to light the bottom. You could get different colors and such.....may be a pretty neat.

Interesting idea and should be neat to see how it works. I don't see any issues as far as building it. I would get the gas burner before making the pit just to make sure it is going to fit ok in the bottom.

Been on my to do list for awhile, put a false bottom in about half way up, make all cut outs above that line, bury a pancake tank under the false bottom

Yes, get your parts before building. The burners come in many sizes and shapes.
Also, I would run a 4" straight up from the bottom to create a pan for the burner and beads, then angle the sides out with the pattern. Otherwise the beads may want to spill out the pattern if openings are large enough. Also the beads are not cheap so it will take a bit of $$$ to fill this pan up.
Post pictures when done.

Thanks for the input! Will see how it comes out. Just thought as many "pits" are built and shown on here that someone has built one before.

Looks real nice! If you get a chance post a pic of your bottle mount too. This would sell better to people who live in places that require spark arrest screens on open fire pits that burn wood plus the flame is much more suitable for use with a cooking grate.

No bottle! This was hard lined in through the concrete from a large outdoor tank.

Looks great SlagBandit !! Just curious, how does the paint hold up ? I make those same fire pits but for wood. I use the RustOlem BBQ paint. Over time the paint gets dingy looking. im curious what the paint job looks like burning gas ? I wasn't sure if it will rust real bad ?

Yes, they are pricey, just have to add that cost to the price of the project. I use this place.

Most are 24"x24" at bottom and flare out to 36"x36" at the top.
